Description

UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
JAMES C. BARLOVV, OF BRIMFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF ANI) J. B. HAMILTON, OF SAME PLAGE.
YSpecification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,936, dated October 16, 1866.
To all whom it my concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES U. BAnLow, of Brimeld, Hampden county, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Lid-Supporter; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact descrip tion thereof, reference bein g had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, of which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective; and Fig. 3 a side View, showing it when shut.
In construction I make this deviee otl four pieces of suitable metal, ot' equal width, which are joined together, one of the joints, A, being in the middle, and the other two, B B', near thetwo ends. The two end pieces, U U, have screw-holes cut through them, so that they may be screwed down, one end t0 the edge of the box or trunk, and the other to the edge of the lid.
In Fig. 2 it will be seen that the end pieces, C C, and joints B B' are sunk in the edge ot the box and lid, respectively, and are held in place by the screws a a a In this manner they are prevented from keeping the lid from -shiitting down closely.
In the sides of box and lid are the grooves or seats D D', in which the pieces E E and joint A tit when the lid is sluit (lows, so that the whole arrangement is ontol' the way when the trunk or box is closed.
In Fig. 3, where the box is closed, it is shown that the supporter is doubled up by means of the joints A and B and B; and in Figs. land 2, where the box is shown open, the supporter keeps the lid from falling back.
The advantages of this arrangement are that it is entirely out of the way when the box or trunk is closed up, and when it is open itdoes not interfere with packing and unpacking by being at the sides, as all the other inventions of this sort. It is besides inueh more compact and durable than any other device for the saine purpose.
Now having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The jointed lid-supporter, attac-hed by its ends, respective] y, to lid and box, on the edges of their sides, constructed and arranged substantiallyY in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
2. The manner ot' arranging the pieces and joints so that they fold up out of the way when the lid is shut down.
