METHODOP PORMNG'THB NEGKS 0F 'FRUIT JARS. No. 411,043. PatentedSept. 17, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHRISTIAN F. LENG AND CHARLES LENG, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
METHOD OF FORMING THE NECKS OF FRUIT-JARS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,043, dated September 17, 1889.
Application filed June 6, 1889. Serial No. 313,368. (No model.)
To all whom it may c0/wern.-
Be it known that we, CHRISTIAN F. LENG and CHARLES LENG, citizens of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Method of Forming the Necks of Fruit-J ars; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same,-reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to an improved method of forming the necks of fruit-jars; and it consists in providing the jar with an annular bulb or bead with an upwardly-proj ectin g ange, reheating the same, and by means of a suitable tool compress the said bead and iiange to form a groove, in which the lid of the jar is secured, as will be fully set forth hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of an unfinished neck of a fruit-jar, showing the manner in which the neck is blown in order to obtain the desired inish. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of thel neck of a jar inished in accordance with my invention. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the tool.used in my improved method. Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same.
To put our invention into practice, we form by means of a suitable mold an annular hollow bead a, extending about the entire neck of the jar c, and an upwardly-extending annular flange b directly above the said bead a and of aless diameter. 3y means of a suitable tool-such as shown at Figs. 3 and 4. on the drawings-the upper portion of the bead is pressed downward on the top of the lower portion and the flange reduced in height and carried down with the bead a, which forms an annular V-shaped groove CZ, in which the lid of the jar Inay be secured. This result is obtained by reheat-ing the neck of the jar, entering the guide c of the tool into the mouth of the same, and by an inward pressure and a rotary movement of the tool the dies f forming the outer contour of the neck, and the plate g and V-shaped annular projection t' the groove d.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Ther herein-described method of forming the necks of jars, consisting of providing an uniinished jar with an annular outwardlyprojecting hollow bead a and an upwardlyprojecting flange b, reheating the said bead a and flange b, and by means of a suitable tool form an annular groove CZ in the top surface of the neck, whereby the lid of the jar may be properly attached, substantially as described.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing we hereunto afX our signatures this 31st day of May, A. D. 1839.
CHRISTIAN F. LENG. CHARLES LENG.
In presence of-n I P. B. REILLY,
M. E. HARRISON.
