J6 5% W M UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FREDRIOII J. HERRINGTON, OF PIrTsBURe, PENNSYLVANIA.
NON-REFILLABLE BOTTLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 700,770, dated May 27, 1902- Applicatlon filed November 26} 1900. Serial No. 37 751. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDRICK J. HERRING- TON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Non-Refillable Bottles; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full,- clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved nonrefillable bottle; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts, as will be fully described hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my improved nonrefillable bottle, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of a portion of the bottle, showing the unfinished neck of the same.
To construct a non-refillable bottle in accordance with my invention, I form in a suitable mold a bottle of any ordinary or wellknown form, such as shown at Fig. 1, the same being provided with a neck 2, the upper part of which is of a larger diameter and in an unfinished state well known in the art. Placed in this unfinished neck 3 is a glass ball 4 of a greater diameter than the neck 2, and by means of a well-known tool (such as are in use in all bottle factories for finishing the necks of bottles) the unfinished portion 3 is formed, as shown at Fig. 1 of the drawings, the same consisting of a contracted neck 5, an enlarged portion having a groove 6, extending about the same. It will be observed that a circumferential groove 4: is formed-in said ball 4, whereby the cement engaging same holds the ball securely to its seat.
The bottle and neck constructed as described is ready for. filling and the liquor placed in the bottle by inverting the same or by'any of the well-known bottle-filling machines. After this has been accomplished the neck 7 is filled with a hard cement or wax, and the bottle is now ready for the market.
To open the bottle, it is necessary to break the upper portion of the neck from the bottle This can be easily accomplished by striking the neck 5 against a convenient stationary obj ect, the fracture taking place at the groove 6, as it is the weakest portion of the neck of the bottle. This fracture removes the upper portion 5 of the neck, together with the cement removed, as is obvious. Slight modifications and changes may be 'made in the details of construction Without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A bottle having a contracted neck 2 merging into a spherical portion which has an annular groove centrally about its circumference, a ball-stop per within said spherical portion and seated over the contracted portion of the neck, the circumference of said stopper having a circumferential groove, and a filling intermediate the inner wall of the spherical portion of the neck and said stopper, as set forth. 7
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affiXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FREDRIQK J. HERRI-NGTON.
