NiTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEANDER K. ROYER, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
FRUIT-JAR'. Y
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 610,834, dated September 13, 1898.
Y Application filed January 25,` 1898. Serial No. 667,865. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDER K. ROYER, a
citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fruit-J ars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a side elevation of the upper part of the jar. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the jar. Fig. 4. is a bottom plan view of the cover, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the jar with the cover removed.
This invention is designed to provide certain new and useful improvements in jarclosures; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the neck and mouth portion of a fruit-jar formed with an external surrounding horizontal ange and shoulder a. Surrounding the orifice of the jar and surrounded by the iiange a is a vertical iiange B,whose upper edge is beveled inwardly, as shown at b, to form a sharp outer edge and a beveled end face.
C designates the lid or cover of the jar, which is formed upon its under side with a central convex portion C', surrounded by a rim or bead c, which is cut vertically to iit within the orifice surrounded by the beveled rim or flange B of the jar. D is a gasket which seats around the rim or bead c and partly upon the rim or iiange B and partly over the horizontal flange 0r shoulder of the jar which surrounds said rim or ange. The
upper surface of the lid is concave and is with the under side of the iiange or sl1oul.
der a.
The cover being placed upon the jar, the rim or bead c presses the gasket D upon the beveled edge of the rim or flange B, thereby making a close joint by pressing or swelling the gasket to ll all irregularities and inequalities of the glass. The convex under side of the lid acts to expel air from the surface of the contents of the jar. The clamp is engaged with the under side of the flange or shoulder a in the manner shown, and its horizontal arm is moved up the inclined or cam surfaces upon the upper side of the lid, thereby forcing the lid down upon the gasket to make a tight joint, as above described.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v The combination with a jar having a vertical inwardly-beveled rim or iian ge surrounding its orifice, of a cover for said jar, having a central convex portion adapted to fit within the said orifice, an outwardly-beveled bead surrounding said central portion and adapted to t upon the inner portion of the in clined surface of said rim or flange, and a gasket seated around the said bead and upon the edge 0f said rim or flange, together with means for securing the cover to the jar, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEANDER K. ROYER.
