specification of Letters Patent.
Patented lFeb. 9, 19115,
Application filed February 14, 1914. Serial No. 818,731.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A. HAY- wonrn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Universal, in the county of Vermilion and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to bottles, and has for an object to provide a bottle constructed and designed to receive and hold in sealing position a top which can be suitably removed when it is desired to open the bottle,
and which will be of a clean and sanitary nature and prevent dust and dirt or germs from entering the bottle when the closure or top is in sealed position.
The invention contemplates, among other features, a bottle particularly adapted to receive and contain milk and which is constructed and designed to provide a series of top-securing members for holding a milk bottle top in position to close and seal the bottle, the said top being adapted to be removed by the use of a suitable implement in the nature of a bottle opener.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective view of the bottle, showing the top applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary perspective view showing the top removed; and Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view, showing the manner of applying an implement to the bottle for removing the top.
Referring more particularly to the views, I disclose a bottle body 10 terminating at its upper end in a tapered neck 11 providing a mouth 12, the upper edge of the said neck at the point of formation of the mouth 12 being additionally tapered to form a seat 13. A series of upwardly projecting gripping members 14 are formed with the bottle body 10 to project upwardly from the neck a distance beyond the upper edge of the seat 13, the said gripping members being preferably arranged in pairs diametrically opposed as shown, and being furthermore each provided with a groove 15 on the inner face thereof.
A cap 16 forming the top or closure for the bottle body 10 has a suitable cork or other wafer 17 secured to the under side thereof and the peripheral edge of the cap is turned down to form an annular flange 18.
After the bottle body has been filled with milk or some other desired fluid, the cap is arranged in position and forced downwardly upon the seat 13 so that portions of the annular flange will extend into the grooves 15 on the inner faces of the gripping members and the wafer 17 will abut against the upper edge of the seat 13 to seal the bottle body, it being further noted that the gripping members projecting upwardly beyond the cap when the same is seated will protect the cap from accidental displacement. The cap preferably has a smooth outer surface so that dust or dirt will not readily collect thereon, and when it is desired to remove the cap from the bottle body an implement indicated by the numeral 19 has a portion thereof applied to an edge of the cap, with the inner end of the implement resting upon one of the gripping members lt, after which an upward pressure is exerted on the outer end of the implement, thus forcing the cap upwardly and away from the seat.
From the foregoing description it will be apparent that the device described is particularly adaptable as a container for milk, but the bottle and top can also be used for other purposes.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a device of the character described, the combination with a cap, of a bottle body including a neck and adapted to receive the cap, a beveled seat formed at the opening to the neck, and a plurality of spaced gripping members formed with the neck and projecting upwardly around the seat and beyond the same, said gripping members having inwardly cut grooves formed on their inner faces and having beveled edges projecting upwardly toward the upper edges of the In testimony whereof I afiix my signature grippingdmemberlsl, mgith {hde dsk adapted to in presence of two witnesses.
