Description

(No Model.) J. ADAIR.
" SHIRT.
No. 407,764. Patented July 30, 1889..
UNIT D STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES ADAIR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SHIRT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 407,764, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed April 1, 1889. Serial No. 305,560. (No model.)
To all whom, it puny concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES ADAIR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county and 'State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shirts; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The object of my invention is to provide a shirt that will be ornamental and neat in appearance, that is easily put on or taken off, having an open front and being closed at the back, and in which the studs may be inserted without danger of wrinkling or otherwise marring the bosom.
To attain the desired end, my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth.
In the drawings which form a part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a view of my improved shirt in an open position. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the buttonholes. I) Z), Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 represents my shirt as it appears in use.
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
My shirt is provided, as stated, with an open bosom, the part A overlappingthe part A, and also with a collar A of ordinary construction.
To the edge I) of the part A, I stitch or otherwise attach a fly B, provided with button-holes b, so placed as to lie directly beneath the button-holes a of the part A when the shirt-bosom is closed, as' for purposes of use.
A series of cross-stitches b may be placed at suitable distances apart, thus dividing the continuous fly into a series of flies orpockets in order to hold the fly B adjacent to the shirt, while allowing sufiicient room for the manipulation of the button-holes Z), which stitches may be used with or without or in place of the stitches b, as desired.
In operation the studs may be placed in the button-holes a of the part A before the fly B is, that the underlying part A protects the person of the wearer from the button or screw of the stud.
My shirt is designed for the use of persons who do not wear those that open in the back,
and provides a rapid and easy means Whereby the studs may be inserted and the bosom thereby fastened together, or one set of studs removed and another inserted when the wearer is fully dressed or in full dress, (by simply grasping the fly B and the button or inner head of the stud with one hand and passing the outer head of the stud through the button-hole a of the overlying part A with the other, or vice versa,) in lieu of having to stand half-dressed for such period of time as might be required for but-toning the two parts of the bosom together, one hand being outside and the other inside of the shirt. My shirt is also peculiarly adapted for a dress-shirt on account of the fact that the flap B forms, in connection with the parts A and A a bellows fold in case the bosom of the shirt is bentas in leaning overand prevents the undershirt from being exposed.
As it is evident that many slight changes in the construction and relative arrangement of parts might be resorted to without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention, I would have it understood that I do not restrict myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts shown and described, but that I reserve the right to make such changes, and that What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a shirt, the combination, with the bosom A A of a fly B, attached to the edge of the upper face of the underlying part A, the
outer edge of the fiy being unattached to the and State of New York, this 27th dztyef Mai-ch, shirt, the fly B and the overlapping part A A. 1889.
being provided, respectively, with the buttonholes 1) 0, as and for the uses and purpose 5 set forth.
In testimony of the foregoing specification I do hereby sign the same, in the city, county,
JAMES ADAIR.
