H. STERN.
NEOKSGARF. No. 396,840.v Patented Jan. 29, 1889..
UNITED STATES PATENT rEicE,
HENRY'STERN, OF STIETABYVILLE, KENTUCKY.
N E C K S C A R F.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 396,840, dated January 29, 1889.
Application filed November 8, 1888. Serial No. 290,263. (No model.)
To (all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY STERN, a citizen of the United States, residin at, Shelbyville, in the county of Shelby and State of Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in (lravats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to in'lprovements in neckscarfs; and it consists in. a certain novel construction and con'ibination of devices, fully set forth hereinafter, in connection with the accompanying drawings, and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a cravat embodying my improvcments. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a :front view with the ends of the cover folded back. Fig. c is a vertical central sectional view. Fig. 5 is a view of the blank of the rear wear-plate.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A designates the frame or former of the cravat, consisting, essentially, of the front and rear sheets, '3 and C, respectively, of card-board, and the cover I), of cloth, silk, or other fabric, which is arranged on the said frame or former. The front sheet, 1: tapered. toward its upper end, and is provided in its upper end with the V-shaped notch or opening I), and the rear sheet, C, is secured to the front sheet, and is provided at the center of its upper end with a notch, 0, to receive the collarbutton. A metallic wear-plate, E, is fitted over the upper edge of the rear sheet and provided with a central notch, e, registering with the notch c, and it is secured in place by the rivet or eyelet e,which passes through the lower end of the plate and the rear sheet.
An intermediate sheet, F, is arranged between the front and rear sheets to form a smooth and even backing for the cover, and
. it is extended slightly above the upper edges of the front and rear sheets, and is provided at its upper ed ge with the metallic wear-plate f.
G G represent pairs of rivets or eyelets arranged, respectively, at opposite edges of the frame or former, and extending through the front, rear, and intermediate sheets to secure them together; and H represents a pin or red extending transversely between the rear and intermediate sheets and held in place at its ends by the said eyelets (4r G, which are ar ranged, respectively, above and below the same.
end of the elastic tongue to engage over the collar-button and prevent the same from slipping out of the notch in the upper edge of the rear sheet.
The cover D consists of a plain strip of any desired fabric, which is folded forwardly at its upper edge to form the flap (Z, and it is passed transversely between the front and intermediate sheets, with its center opposite the V-shaped notch in the former, after which the projecting ends of the cover are folded forwardly over the beveled side edges of the front sheet and extended across the said front sheet in inclined directions, as shown clearly in Fig. 1. The function of the intermediate plate is to bear againstthe head of the collar-button (to which the scarf is attached) and prevent the latter from wearing the cover. It forms a shield or guard, which is interposed between the collar-button and the cover of the scarf.
The object in folding the upper edge of the cover to form the flap (Z to present the face or right side of the cloth or fabric, as a portion of the latter will be visible through the V-shaped notch, and when the ends of the cover are folded over the frame 01- former the face or right sides of these portions will also be visible. If the material which is used for the cover is double-faced, this precaution will be unnecessary, as will be readily understood.
The improved eravat is simple in construction and may be cheaply manufactured, and when one cover is worn or it is desired to change the same a new one may be readily inserted in the manner above described.
Having thus described the invention, I claim- 1. The frame fora neckscarf, having a front IOC sheet, B, the rear sheet, C, secured to the front sheet and provided with a transverse slot, I, the elastic tongue K, extending at one end through the said slot and provided at its free end with a loop, L, and the removable pin I l, extending transversely between the front and rear plates and engaging the extremity of the tongue K, co1nbine(l \vith the cover folded around the front sheet substantially as specified.
2. The frame for a neoksearf, havin a front sheet, a rear sheet provided with a notch to engage the collar-button, and an intermediate sheet interposed between the front and rear sheet and adapted to bear against the head of the collar-button, combined with a cover arranged between the front sheet and the intermediate sheet and folded around the front sheet, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in. presence of two witnesses.
HENRY STERN.
