BUTTONHOLE REPAIR-PATCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 522,? 68, dated J uly 10, 1894.

To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. ROCHE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to a device which is especially adapted for the temporary repair of button-holes which have become worn and broken out. It consists in certain details of construction which will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective of my device. Fig. 2 is a view showing the application to the button-hole at the front of the neck-band. Fig. 3 is a section of the device. Fig. 4 shows the application to a culf or other button-hole made upon the edge of a piece of goods.
The object of this invention is to provide a readily removable and transferable repair patch, which is easily applied whenever a button-hole breaks out unexpectedly; whereby the article is temporarily placed in a condition to be worn without making a permanent repair atthe time.
It often occurs that by rough usage in washing or by wear, button-holes and especially the one which is made in the front of the neck-band of a shirt, become so affected that they will unexpectedly break out when a co1- lar button is being introduced, and the only remedy ordinarily is to make an entire change of the garment.
In my invention I employ a piece of suitable material A which is folded centrally so that it fits over the neck-band or other part in which the button-hole is made, and extends a sufficient distance beyond the button-hole to allow the insertion of the fastening strips B, and having holes made through the two folded parts with their major axes extending transverse of the width thereof, which coincide with the original button-hole and are adapted to receive and hold the button.

These strips are of any suitable form and construction. In the present case I have shown the fastener which is usually employed for securing paper and legal documents together.
The edge of the repair piece is perforated with one or more holes, and the fasteners are introduced through these holes, and afterward secured in the usual manner of securing such fasteners.
The repair strip is preferably made of colluloid, thin metal like aluminum, or any suitable non-corrosive material having sufficient strength and flexibility for the'purpose. It is usually stamped out and holes stamped through it corresponding approximately with the position of the button-hole which is to be repaired, so that the operator has only to slip the folded repair piece over the edge of the material, the two sides of the repair piece extending down upon opposite sides of the material until the button-hole approximately coincides with the position of the one made through the garment.
By means of the fasteners before described the repair patch is secured in place upon both sides, and the button is then introduced through the holes 0 of the repair patch, and as this is firmly secured to the garment, all parts are strongly repaired.
If desired, this removable patch may be left in. position, or it may be removed after the occasion of its use, and permanent repairs made in any usual or suitable manner.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A readily removable and transferable attachment adapted to be fitted to an article of personal wear to temporarily repair a broken button hole, consisting of astrip of non-cor rosive material folded upon itself so that its bight may be fitted over the edge of the garment and its folded members made to clasp both sides of the portion of the garment through which the broken button hole is made, said members having openings formed in them near their centers with the major axes extending transversely of the width of a point beyond the broken button hole of the the folded members said openings adapted to coincide with each other and with the broken button hole of the garment, and to serve as a temporary button hole for said garment and independent and readily detachable fastenings for removably securing the free ends of said members to the garment at Witnesses:
