ATTACHING BUTTONS TO CARDS.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 232,057, dated September '7, 1880.

Application filed April 15, 1878.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL L. OTIS, of Birmingham, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements pertaining to Attaching Buttons to Cards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is aview of thefront of a card with Fig. 2 is a View of the back of the same card both with and without the covering-strips. Before this my invention buttons have been secured to cards by passing a single continuous thread through the eyes or shanks of the several buttons; and to secure the thread from displacement and the buttons from acci dental detachment a sheet of paper has been pasted over the back of the card and thread. By this construction thereis a large consumption of thread and paper and the object of my invention is to reduce the cost and simplify the construction of this mode of putting but-' tons upon the market.

To this end my invention consists in securing each button separately to the card by a loop of thread passed through the eye or shank of the buttons and lying upon the back of the card, and there secured in rows by strips of paper pasted upon the card.

The letter a denotes the card, and b b, &c., denote buttons.

The letters 0 denote short pieces of thread which pass through the holes in the buttons, thence through the card to the rear face thereof, where they are flat down on the card and pasted thereto, each button being fastened to the card by a separate and distinct thread.

The pasted ends on the back of the card may be covered by a strip of paper, d, or the like, which '1 denominate herein coveringstrips, which will conceal the ends from sight, and if colored paper is used for these coveringstrips the effect may be made very ornamental.

As compared with the common mode of attaching buttons to cards, my method offers, among others, advantages as follows, to wit:

First. My mode is adapted for accomplishment by a machine, while in the common mode thework must be done by hand.

Second. My mode effects a saving of twentyfive per cent. in the quantity of thread used.

Third. When a cowering-strip is used for the back a decided saving in the use thereof can be effected, as I can use strips merely, and need not cover the whole card.

Fourth. By my mode there is not the least danger of disturbing one button by detaching another.

The article herein shown, described, and claimed is incidentally shown in Patent No. 222,837, granted to me December 23, 1879; but no claim is made thereto in said patent, as the invention for which said patent was granted relates to a machine for attaching buttons to cards.

I claim as my invention An imperforated card having rows of buttons secured thereon, each button being fastened by separate andindependent pieces or loops of thread inserted through the buttons and card, and the free end of the loops or pieces of thread secured to the back of the card by a strip of pasted paper, substantially as described.
