Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
REUBEN ASKEY, OF PHILIPSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SCISSORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 392,395, dated November 6, 1888.
Application filed June 2'7, 1888.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, REUBEN ASKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philipsburg, in the county of Centre and State of Pen nsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scissors; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention,'such as will enable others skilled in the art to'which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to an improvement in scissors; and its object is to provide a combined knife and stiletto, in combination with a pair of scissors, in such a manner that the same does not render the scissors cumbersome, and yet are so conveniently and safely located that said knife and stiletto may at any time be readil y used in numberless ways by ladies, tailors, or seamstresses. I attain this object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the knife and stiletto detached. Fig. 3 is a side view in position for use of stiletto. Fig. 4 is a bottom view of same detached. Fig. 5 is a bottom view of the combined knife and stiletto and the mechanism whereby the same is securely held in its place. Fig. 6 is a transverse view on the line 00 x.
A designates the scissors, which are constructed in the usual manner, with the exception of the slot or on either blade, which is flanged or narrower at the top than at the bottom of slot, with a view of easily adjusting or sliding in the bar B. Near the top of the blade in said slot there is a small orifice, a, adapted to the bolt or rivet c. i
B represents the bar of iron or'steel, constructed with the knife-blade 1) upon one end, the stiletto 1) upon the other, and the orifices b To the center of bar B there is pivoted astrap of elastic steel, 0, which is slightly curved, for w the purpose of causing the same to press down firmly upon said bar, whereby the bar isse- S erial No. 278,380. (No model.)
curely held in position of the combined knifeblade and stiletto after it is in place in slot at,
In order to remove the bar 13 from the scissors-blade, raise the rivet on the end of the strap 0 that is in orifice a and slip the elastic st rap of steel 0 around, as shown in Fig. 5. The bar B can then readily be removed.
It will be observed that the bar B can readily be detached and either instrument used that is needed. If the knife is wanted, the stiletto end of said bar is adjusted, and if the stiletto is needed the end of the bar provided with the knife is adjusted as shown in Fig. 3. When neither stiletto nor knife is desired, the bar is adjusted as shown in Fig. l.
I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction shown, as it is apparent that the principle involved can be effected under an entirely different construction.
The usefulness and practicability of my invention are so apparent that it is useless to further enlarge upon its merits.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A pair of scissors formed with a slot upon the outside of either blade, having the orifice a, in combination with a bar having a knife and stiletto upon its ends and the orifices b and the elastic strap 0, pivoted to said bar and provided with rivets c, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
REUBEN 'ASKEY.
