UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM lVI. IRICK, 0F SAN ANGELO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF T0 JAMES B. GANONG, OF SAN ANGELO, TEXAS.
POCKET-KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 19, 1911.
Application filed April 12, 1911. Serial No. 620,639.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. IRICK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of San Angelo, in the county of Torn Green and State of Texas, have invented a new and Improved Pocket-Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates generally to pocket knives and more particularly involves one having the handle portion thereof provided with a suitable sharpening device.
The object of my invention is to provide a pocket knife having a whet stone or other suitable sharpening material provided in one side of the handle thereof, this handle portion being removably secured to the bolsters of the knife, together with convenient means permitting the removal of the handle portion when it is desired to use the stone or sharpening material.
While I have shown my invention applied to a pocket knife, it is obvious that it may be applied to the handle portion of any knife, such as a butcher knife or a hunting knife.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this speciication, in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a side View of a pocket knife embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof, on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a side view of the knife showing the handle portion removed; Fig. 4 is a side view of the detached handle portion showing the sharpening material; Fig. 5 is a vertical section al view, on the line 5-5 of Fig. 2.
The handle portion of my knife is provided with the usual scale pieces 1, 2, together with bolsters 3, 4, each pair of bolsters being suitably held together by means of rivets 5, 6, each rivet forming a bearing for a blade 7, 8. Each scale piece l, 2, is removable and the inner portion thereof is provided with a whet stone or a piece of carborundum 9 which is suitably held in position thereon. The inside face of each of the scale pieces is provided with a longitudinally extending portion 10 having normally projecting parts 11, 12, at opposite ends thereof, which projecting ends, together with the portion 10, constitute a pocket. The portions 10 at one end of each scale piece are extended whereby a member 14 results which is adapted to be received in a recess l5 contained in each of the bolsters 3 and adjacent the lower portion thereof. Each of the scale pieces is suitably secured to the portions 10 by means of rivets 16, 17. Each scale piece adjacent one of its ends and at its inner side portion is provided with a longitudinally extending slotted portion 18, each portion communieating with a recess adjacent the outer face of the scale piece, which recess is adapted to have a suitable bearing member 19 placed therein, which member is provided with an opening 20 within which the pin 21 is movable. In each of the recesses 18 a catch 22 is seated, one end of the catch being engaged in a suitable recess 23 contained in the bolster 4. The pin 21 is provided with a suitable gripping portion 25, the upper edge of which is wholly included within the bearing member 1S) whereby no projecting parts result, the end 25 being freely movable back and forth within this bearing member. The material 9 which forms the whet stone or other sharpening element is brought into position for use by sliding the pin 21 (as shown in Fig. 2) to the left, thereby carrying the catch 22 out of engagement with the bolster 4 when the scale piece may be easily lifted out, the recess 15 in the opposite bolster 3 being conveniently shaped to permit the extending part 11 to be freely withdrawn.
Vhile I have shown my invention in a single embodiment, it is obvious that many changes may be made in the construction thereof without departing from the spirit' of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. A pocket knife having the scale piece thereof provided with a longitudinally extending member on its inner face, projecting parts adjacent the ends of the said longitudinally extending member whereby a pocket is formed, a suitable sharpening material contained y'in the said pocket, one end of the said longitudinally extending member being provided with an extended portion, a recess in the inner portion of the said scale piece, and adjacent the opposite end of the said longitudinally extending member, a movable member contained in the said recess and having a transversely extending gripping portion at one end thereof passing through the said scale piece, the bolsters of the knife being provided with recesses receiving the said extended portion and one end of the said movable member, whereby the said scale piece with the sharpening material thereon is suitably held in position. y
2. A pocket knife having the scale piece thereof provided with a longitudinally extending member on its inner face, projecting parts adjacent the ends of the said member whereby a pocket is formed, a suitable sharpening material contained in the said pocket, one end of the said longitudinally extending member being provided with an extended portion, a recess inthe inner portion of the said scale piece and adjacent the opposite end of the said longitudinally extending member, a recess adjacent the outer face of the said scale piece, a movable member contained in the first said recess, a pin carried by the said movable member having at its outer end a gripping portion movable in the recess in the outer face of the said scale piece, the bolsters of the knife at opposite ends thereof being provided with recesses receiving the said extended portion and one end of the said movable member, whereby the said scale piece with the sharpening material thereon is held in position.
