Definitions

  • a fuel pumping apparatus for an internal combustion engine includes a control rod movable towards a minimum fuel position by means of a governor mechanism, which is responsive to the speed of an associated engine, the governor mechanism acting against the action of a governor spring.
  • the mechanism includes an operator controlled member, which is movable to increase the force exerted by the spring, and in addition can effect stressing of a resilient means against the action of which the control rod must be moved by the governor mechanism as the speed of the engine increases.
  • This invention relates to liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus for supplying fuel to internal combustion engines.
  • the apparatus is of the kind comprising an injection pump having an adjustable control member movable to effect control of the amount of fuel delivered by the apparatus at each injection stroke, the apparatus also in eluding a governor mechanism comprising centrifugally operable weights movable with increasing speed in opposition to the action of a governor spring, a lever connecting the governor mechanism with the control member whereby as the weights move in opposition to the action of the spring the control member will be moved to reduce the amount of fuel supplied by the apparatus at each injection stroke, an operator controlled member for controlling the force exerted by the spring and a stop for limiting the movement of the control member in one direction thereby to limit the maximum amount of fuel which can be delivered by the apparatus at each injection stroke.
  • a governor mechanism comprising centrifugally operable weights movable with increasing speed in opposition to the action of a governor spring, a lever connecting the governor mechanism with the control member whereby as the weights move in opposition to the action of the spring the control member will be moved to reduce the amount of fuel supplied by the apparatus at each injection stroke
  • the object of the invention is to provide such an apparatus in a simple and convenient form.
  • an adjustable member positioned so that control member can engage therewith, and resilient means connecting said adjustable member with said operator controlled member whereby" upon movement of said operator controlled member to increase the fuel supplied by the apparatus at each injection stroke, the adjustable member will be moved so that during movement of the control member to increase the speed of the engine, the control member will be operative to move the adjustable member and said resilient means will be stressed.
  • FIG. I shows part of a liquid fuel pumping apparatus in vertical section, with portions being shown diagramatically;
  • FIG. 2 is a transverse section taken substantially on the plane of line 22 of FIG. 1, with portions removed for purposes of clarity.
  • a hollow housing which is adapted to be mounted upon a pump 9.
  • the pump 9 is of conventional design and includes an injection pump operable in timed relationship with an engine with which the apparatus is associated and the pump is driven by a shaft 11 which is coupled to the engine.
  • the shaft 11 in fact is extended through the housing 11 and a closure member for the housing is provided which supports a bearing for the shaft.
  • the projecting portion of the shaft is coupled by means of a coupling (not shown) to the engine.
  • the injection pump includes an axially movable control member in the form ofa rod 12, the rod 12 also extending into the housing 10.
  • the axial position of the rod 12 determines the quantity of fuel delivered at each injection stroke of the injection pump and it is arranged that movement of the rod towards the right as shown in the drawing effects an increase in the quantity of fuel supplied at each injection stroke.
  • the shaft ll mounts a governor weight assembly 13 and this comprises a plurality of eentrifugally operable weights which as the shaft rotates, move outwardly under the action of centrifugal force.
  • the outward movement of the weights effects axial movement of a member which is shown diagrammatically at 14 and this member is coupled by means of a lever also shown diagrammatically at 15 to the control rod 12.
  • the lever 15 is pivoted within the housing 10.
  • an elongated leaf spring which is shown diagrammatically at 16. The leaf spring bears at one end upon the member indicated by the line 14 and at its other end it is pivotally con nected to the housing.
  • a roller 17 is provided and this is movable by means of a pivotal, operator-controlled member 18 against a ramp 19. It will .be seen that as the operator controlled member 18 is moved in the clockwise direction, the roller 17 will move downwardly and the effect of the ramp 19 will be to stress the spring 16 so that an increased force is provided to resist the' outward movement of the governor weights under the action of centrifugal force.
  • the mechanism so far described constitutes a simple governor for the fuel pump and for a given setting of the operator controlled member there will be a eorresponding engine speed and the effect of the governor is that should the speed increase for any reason, then the weights will move outwardly against the action of the spring 16 and the effect of this is to move the control member 12 towards the left thereby to reduce the amount of fuel supplied at each injection stroke by the pump 9 to the engine. Conversely, if the engine speed should fall then the weights will move inwardly and the effect will be that the control rod 12 will be moved towards the right thereby to increase the quantity of fuel supplied to the engine.
  • the operator controlled member 18 is mounted upon a shaft 20 extending transversely within the housing and connected externally of the apparatus to a control lever or control pedal.
  • abutment 21 Mounted on the control rod 12 is an abutment 21 and this is shaped for co-operation with a pair of lever members 22, 23.
  • Lever 23 is mounted on a shaft which extends exterior of the housing and can be moved to engage the abutment 21 to effect movement of the control member 12 towards the left and to a position in which no fuel is supplied by the apparatus.
  • the lever member 23 therefore constitutes the stop control of the apparatus.
  • the lever member 22 is pivotally mounted about a shaft and is extended to form a mounting for an adjust ing screw 24 in addition, the :main portion of the lever member 22 acts between the abutment 21 and an ad justable stop 25 to control the maximum movement of the control rod 12 towards the right and thereby determines the maximum amount of fuel which can be supplied at each injection stroke.
  • the adjusting screw 24 bears upon a ledge which is formed on a further lever 26 which is angularly movable about the axis of movement of the lever member 22..
  • the lever 26 has an extended portion which at its lower end is inclined towards the axis of the shaft and mounted upon the extended portion is a leaf spring 27.
  • the leaf spring 27 bears against a surface 28 formed on the boss which mounts the operator controlled member 18 upon the shaft 20.
  • the operator controlled member 18 is in the idling position, but as it is moved by the operator to effect an increase in the speed of operation of the engine, the surface 28 will urge the end of the spring with which it abuts, in a direction generally clockwise about the axis of movement of the lever 22. Movement of the lever 26 will, through the intermediary of the adjusting screw 24, effect clockwise movement of the lever 22.
  • a liquid fuel injection pumping apparatus comprising an injection pump, an adjustable control member movable to effect control of the amount of fuel delivered by the pump at each injection stroke, a governor mechanism for controlling the setting of said control member, said governor mechanism comprising a centrifugally operable weight and a governor spring, the weight acting with increasing speed to move the control member against the action of the governor spring to reduce the amount of fuel supplied by the pump, an operator controlled member for adjusting the force exerted by the governor spring, an adjustable member positioned so that the control member can engage therewith and resilient means connecting said adjustable member with said operator controlled member whereby upon movement of said operator controlled member to increase the fuel supplied by the pump at each injection stroke, the adjustable member will be moved so that during movement of the control member to increase the fuel supplied by the pump, the control member will 'contact the adjustable member and said resilient means will be stressed.
  • An apparatus including a stop engageable with said adjustable member for limiting the maximum amount of fuel which can be supplied by the injection pump.
