Abstract
1420749 Centrifugal governors SIMMS MOTOR UNITS Ltd 22 Feb 1973 [2 March 1972] 9692/72 Heading G3B Fuel injection apparatus for an I.C. engine is operable to ensure that a sudden increase in load does not result in an excessive decrease in speed. The apparatus comprises an injection pump 9 having a control rod 12, a centrifugal governor 13 for opposing the load of a spring 16 and operable, via a lever 15, to control the position of the rod 12, an operator controlled member 18 for adjusting the loading of the spring 16, and coaxial adjustable levers 22, 26 carrying a spring 27 engaging the operator controlled member 18 and being positionable for engagement by an abutment 21 on the rod 12. The apparatus is shown with the operator controlled member 18 in the idling position. On start-up the governor 13 causes the control rod 12 to move to the left to decrease the delivery of the pump 9. Thereafter clockwise movement of the member 18 moves a roller 17 along a ramp 19 to increase the loading of the spring 16 and thus move the rod 12 rightwards i.e. the fuel increase direction. This causes the abutment 21 to engage and turn the lever 22 before the rod 12 reaches the maximum fuel position as determined by an adjustable stop 25. Turning the lever 22, acts via an adjusting screw 24, to turn the lever 26 and thus stress the spring 27 which thereby assists the action of the governor weights. The stressing of spring 27 is against an abutment surface 28 on the member 13. The surface 28 is profiled so that, for a given speed, the maximum fuel is not, as hitherto, dependent on the position of the operator controlled member 18. In the event of a sudden increase in load and thus a sudden decrease in the force of the governor weights, the leaf-spring 16 immediately moves the rod 12 to increase the fuel supply by overcoming the spring 27 and allowing the lever to contact the maximum fuel stop 25. A further lever 23 is pivotable in a clockwise direction to move the rod 12 to the zero delivery position.
