4 Claims. (Cl. 74--522) This invention relates'to a governing mechanism and has particular reference to a new and improved governing mechanism which is adjustable to vary the governor action and which also permits the balance of the output of engines in parallel operation so that the load is equally divided among the number of units involved.
An object of the invention is to provide new and improved governing means which is capable of adjustment to provide a speed regulation of desired 'value.
Another object is to provide governing means of the type set forth wherein the governing means may be adjusted without interfering with the engine operation.
Another object is to provide a new and improved centrifugal type governing means for internal combustion engines.
Another object is to provide new and improved governor means having an adjustable fulcrum lever.
Another object is to provide a new and improved fulcrum lever for governing mechanism which lever is so constructed as to allow the adjusting of the fulcrum pin position to provide coarser regulation or closer regulation as desired.
Another object is to provide a new and improved governing mechanism wherein the degree of regulation or action may be easily and quickly controlled or varied as desired.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from the following descriptions taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and will be understood that changes may be made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention as the preferred form has been given by way of illustration only.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic side view of a bodying the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view thereof taken on line 2-2, looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 3 is a front view of the fulcrum governor lever;
Fig. 4 is a side view of the lever shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a top or plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings wherein simple reference characters designate corresponding parts therewith, the governing apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises the casing or housing into which extends the injection pump drive shaft 11 and the fuel injection pump control rod 12.
The governor shaft 13 is shown operatively connected to drive shaft 11 by means of the intermeshing gears 14 and 15. The governor shaft 13 could be a continuation of pump shaft 11 depending upon the speed at which the pump is operated. In the arrangement shown in Fig. l, the pump shaft is adapted for operation at one-half engine speed.
On shaft 13 is mounted the support 16 on which is pivot mounted the centrifugal governor weight 17 adapted to be controlled by centrifugal force and moves sleeve 18 against the force of governor spring 19 when centrifugal force is sufficient to pivot the weights away from shaft 13.
governor em- ICE On sleeve 18 is pivotly mounted governor lever or. fulcrum lever 20 which has the spaced lower or leg pore tions 21 which are connected to the end of bracket 22 on shaft 23 and on which is positioned the spring 24. Shaft 23 is adapted to be controlled through operating lever 25 which is connected to the usual throttle. I
Fulcrum lever 20 is connected to the fuel injection pump control rack 12 by the connecting link 26.
The fulcrum lever 20 is adapted to be pivotly connected to sleeve 18 by means'of the pivot 270m of which is carried by each leg 28 of the adjustable section of the fulcrum lever and the legs 28 are connected by the connecting portion 29 which has the threaded or nut por-, tion 30.
The pivot pin 27 extends through slots 31 in the opposed legs or portions 21 of the lever 20.
On the lever 20 is positioned the support 32 through which extends the threaded member 33 whichvhas the head portion 34 and the slots adapted to receive a screw driver for adjustment of threaded member 33 and portion 33 is threaded and adapted to be in threaded relation with the nut portion 30 on member 29 whereby said member and its leg portions 28 carrying pivot 27 may be adjusted as a unit relative lever 20.
The spring 35 is positioned on member 33 between support 32 and nut portion 30.
It will be seen that by removing cap 10a on governor housing 10 that a screw driver may be inserted through said opening for adjusting threaded member 33 to adjust the position of fulcrum pivot 27 relative to lever 20. This allows for the change internally of the fulcrum pin or pivot position which position for coarser or closer regulation as desired when the governor having but one set of springs and allows the governor to hold the engine speed constant within desired limits for any constant value of load and also permits balancing the output of engine in parallel operation.
The micro-adjustment positioned by threaded member 33 enables refinement of regulation to synchronize two or more engines so that the load is equally divided among the number ofengines involved.
It is pointed out that by adjustment of the position of the pivots by the governor lever in the manner stated above that the object of the invention may be realized, and that it is the principal object of the invention to provide a governor lever having adjustable fulcrum pivots and that it is desirable that such'fulcrum pivots be adjustable during operation of the engine.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided simple, efiicient and economical means for obtaining all of the objects and advantages of the invention.
I claim:

A fulcrumlever for use with a variable speed governor having a governor shaft, a sleeve mounted for longitudinal movement on said shaft, means for effecting movement of said sleeve in one direction as a function of speed of shaft rotation, and resilient means for urging said sleeve in the opposite direction, said fulcrum lever comprising a yoke having a fixed portion having pivot connections adjacent the free ends of the legs thereof and an adjustable portion mounted for longitudinal adjustment relative to said fixed portion, said adjustable portion having pivot means for pivotally connecting said lever and means for adjusting said adjustable portion rela tive to said fixed portion and retaining said adjustable portion in adjusted position.
' 2,870,651 7 I i e comprising; a yoke having. a fixed portion having pivot connections adjacent the freeends of the legs. thereof and. an adjustable portion mounted for longitudinal adjust ment relative to said fixed portion, said adjustable portionhaving pivot means for pivotally connecting said lever and meansfor adjusting said adjustable portiorr relativejto said fixed portion and locking means, for retaining said adjust-able portion in adjusted position.
3.; A fulcrum lever for use with a variable speed governor having a governor shaft, a sleeve mounted for longitudinal. movement on said shaft, means for efiecting movement of said sleeve in one direction as a function of speed of shaft rotation, and resilient means for urging said1sleevei'nthe opposite direction, said fulcrum lever comprising a yoke having, a U-shaped fixed portion having pivot connections adjacent the free ends of the legs thereof. and a U-shaped adjustable portion mounted for longitudinal adjustment relative to said fixed portion, said adjustable portion having pivot means for pivotally connecting said lever and means for. adjusting said adjustableportion. relative to said fixed portion and retaining said adjustable portion in adjusted position.
4. A fulcrum lever for use witha variable speed governor having a governor shaft, a sleeve mounted for longitudinal movement on said shaft, means for effecting movement of. said sleeve in one direction as a function of speed of. shaft rotation, and resilient means for urging said 4 sleeve in the opposite direction, said fulcrum lever comprising. a. yoke having. a. fixed. portion, having pivot connections adjacent the free ends of the legs thereof and an adjustable portion mounted for longitudinal adjustment relative to said fixed portion, said adjustable portion hav ing pivot means for pivotally connecting said lever and threaded means connecting said fixed and adjustable portions for adjusting said adjustable portion relative to said fixed portion and retaining said adjustable portion in -adjusted position.
