PATENT OFFICE.
FREEMAN N. SAYLOR, OF STRATHROY, CANADA.
SPEED-REGULATOR FOR GOVERNORS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 499,255, dated June 13, 1893. Application filed September 1, 1892. Serial No. 444,719. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREEMAN N. SAYLOR, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, and a resident of Strathroy, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented a certain new and useful Automatic Uniform Speed-Regulator for Governors, of which the following is a description.
Nearly all swinging ball governors of a steam engine, are provided with a resistance to their centrifugal force. This resistance is usually in the form of a weight or spring, which is regulated by hand, that is when the load is increased, the resistance has to be increased, and vice versa to make the revolutions of the governor uniform, under various loads or steam pressures.
My invention consists of a device, by which this resistance is regulated automatically, and
simultaneously with the governor, to establish a uniform rate of revolution to said governor, under various loads or steam pressures.
Reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a governor, illustrating my invention, in connection therewith, and showing the governor in its upper position. Fig. 2 is another view of same, showing the governor in its lower position. Fig. 3 is another View of same, showing the governor in its intermediate position.
A, designates any suitable support; B, a lever, one end of which is pivotally secured to any suitable support such as, A.
O, designates a weight, or a spring may be used which may be secured to, or formed integral with said lever about midway between its ends.
H, designates a radial arm, pivotally secured at one end to the lower end of the bell crank, F.
E, designates a coupling link, which is pivotally secured to, and connects the lever, B, with the radial arm, H.
D, designates a hanger or link, which is pivotally secured atone end to any suitable support, such as A, the other end being pivotally secured to the radial arm, H, and link, E. F, designatesa bell or other multiple crank, pivoted on any suitable support, such as, A.
G, is a rod, which connects the swinging governor balls, with one end of the bell or multiple crank, F. I
I, designates a support, which \not only guides the rod, G but from the upper end of which, the governor balls, J, are supported.
K, designates a rod, which may be at any angle, to transmit the action of the governor to the apparatus, which trips the steam valves of an automatic cut ofi engine; as shown in the accompanying drawings, this rod, K, is attached to the lower end of the bell crank, bnt this rod or rods, K, may be attached to the bell crank, F, or to any multiple crank, at any point, as found most suitable or convenient under the circumstances, when this device is applied to different classes of engines, or water wheels.
The operation of my invention is as follows: When the load of a steam engine is increased, the centrifugal force of the governor is reduced, and the resistance to this centrifugal force is increased, because the radial 'arm, 11, is brought to a more horizontal position. And when the load of a steam engine is reduced, the centrifugal force of the governor is increased, and the resistance to this centrifugal force is reduced, because the radial arm, H, is brought to a more vertical po sition. As the centrifugal force of the governor changes, and operates the weight, 0, through the radial arm, H, lever, B, and links, D, E, the operation of these links and levers, assists said governor to move and control the vertical adjustment of said Weight. As a result, my device would permit the engine to run at a uniform rate of speed under various loads and steam pressures, within the capacity of the engine. I
I do not wish to confine myself to the special arrangement of parts, as shown in the accompanying drawings, as they may be varied at will, as found most suitable or convenient under the different circumstances, connected with attaching this invention to different classes of engines, or water wheels, provided with difierent governors. I
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A radial arm, H, or its substantial equiva- In testimony whereof I affix my signature lent, and a bell or multiple crank, F, in comin the presence of the two undersigned witbination with the hanger or link, D, link, E, nesses.
