T. OLAPHAM.
MAST HOOP.
Patented Aug. 14, 1888.
WIT/758858:
ATTORNEY,
UNITED STATES PATENT @rricn.
THOMAS CLAPHAM, OF ROSLYX, NEW YORK.
MAST-HOOP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,767, dated August 14, 1888.
Application tiled Mulch 29, 1888. Serial Nuance-22. (No model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS OLAPHAH, of Roslyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have in vented a new and Improved Mast-Hoop, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in masthoops, and has for its object to provide a detachable open mast-hoop whereby the hoop may be readily attached to or detached from a sail, and the latter thereby be conveniently unbeut or bent, as desired.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts, as hereinafter fullydescribcd, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved mast-hoop attached to a sail; and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same, the sail being in horizontal section.
Ordinarily mast-hoops are attached to the sail by binding with marline or twine. This operation is tedious and troublesome. It is frequently desirable to quickly attach the mast hoop to or detach it from the sail, and when the said hoops are seen red as above set forth this is rendered almost impossible.
I aim by my invention to overcome these difficulties; and to this end the invention consists of providing an open mast-hoop consisting of a strip or rod of spring metal or equivalent material bent upon itself to form an approximately open circle or hoop, 10, the ends of the rod or strip being bent or curved from the open point 11 outward and then inward upon themselves in opposite directions to form sister books 12 and 13. The elasticity of the hoop itself is sufficient to hold the hooks in a secure locked position; but if found in practice more desirable an elastic band, 14, may be made to surround the shanks of the sister hooks at their point of divergence from the hoop.
By means of the above construction roller beads or pearls 15 may be strong upon the hoop to prevent friction in hoisting the sail. The hooks are adapted for entrance in the eye of the sail; but if found desirable in an emen gency the extremities of the hoops may be made to engage the sail at each side of the luffrope.
In operation the hooks are sprung laterally to admit the luff-rope adjacent to the eyes 16, whereupon the hoop is slightly turned, permitting the ends of the hooks to enter the said eye from opposite sides.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improved article of manufacture, a mast-hoop consisting of a spring-metal rod bent upon itself to form an approximatelyopen circle or hoop, and having its ends bent or curved outward from the open point and then inward upon themselves in opposite direction to form sister hooks, as set forth.
THOMAS CLAPHAM.
