Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE@ FRANK B. OLENCH, OF LOCKQPORT, NEV YORK.
CUSPIDOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,622, dated August 14, 1888.
Application filer] September l5, 1887. Serial N o. 249,776.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK B. OLENoH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented certain new and use fullmprovements in Cuspidors; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will. enable others skilled in the Yart to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
The main object ot" this invention is to do away, as far as possible, with the unpleasant features of the ordinary spittoons or cuspidors by making that portion receiving the spittle, tobaccoj nice, Snc., in nests or aseries of removable surfaces nested together, and vwhen one is defaced or dirty to take it out, leaving the next clean surface exposed, and so on. This and the other features in connection therewith will be fully understood by reference to the following specification and claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of the device set in a holder or bracket; Fig. 2, a crosssection of same through line :c :v,Fig. 1; Fig. 3, a plan of holder or bracket; Fig. 4, a perspective of the cuspidor made round instead of square, and cover removed.
A represents an outer case, either of square, round, conical, or other convenient shape, tapering inside either to a point or iiat bottom and made of any suitable material, and having a hinged cover, A.
B is the holderA of the expectorations, Ste., agreeing in form with the case A, as described, or the case may be round or square and the holder B tapering and setting inside of case A. It is composed of a nest of prepared-paper receptacles, kc c c c, or of any suitable substance or material impervious, or nearly so, to wet, and thin in body or texture, so that from two to iifty of them will comprise a nest, and when one is dirty it is lifted out, with its c0ntents,and thrown away, and so on until the nest is used up and is replaced by a new set. These series or nests will be supplied, if desired, separate from the case A, which is generally indestructible. Openings or loops will be provided to lift out the nest or its separate parts.
(No model.)
After the nest is set in the case A, a hinged top piece, a, of metal or wood, &c., is shut down over the edges of the nest, (shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 4,) it having an opening, a", in the center to receive the expectorations, cigarstumps, &c., and keep these from getting between the other parts of the nest. The cover A shuts down over the whole top, it being important to keep the odor from the room as wellas hiding the disagreeable contents. Ihese cases A are preferably made tapering, coneshaped, or with a bead, so as to set into a holder or bracket, C, which permits the device to be fastened to a wall, out of the way of being kicked 0ver,to a bedstead, side of a desk, 85e.; or if the fastening part bis made round or into a clamp it can be attached toa roundleg, post, pillar, &c. rlhe bracket may also be jointed so as to swing in and ont.
In Fig. 4a standard is shown in dotted lines, into which the cuspidor, if cone-shaped, will be set when placed on a floor instead of fast- 75 ening to a wall.
rIhe advantages yof this nest of removable receivers and the construction, so as to attach to a wall, arc obvious and need not be enlarged upon.
I claiml. In a cuspidor or spittoon, the combination of the case A, removable sa1iva-holder B, consisting of a series of receptacles, c c c c, nested together therein, and bracket or holder C, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In combination with the case or shell of a spittoon or cuspidor, the removable salivaholder B, consisting of aseries of receptacles, c c c c, nested together therein and adapted to be removed singly when soiled or damaged, all substantially as and for the purpose specified. Y
3. In acuspidor or spittoon, the combination of the case or shell A, removable holder B,con 95 sisting of a series of receptacles, c c cc, nested together therein, covering-piece a c, cover A', and bracket C b, all arranged and operating substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I afx my signature in :of: presence of two witnesses.
FRANK B. CLENCH.
