SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,429,41ated August 7, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, Lines A. MAnsrmLn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waverly, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buggy-Boots, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved cover or top for abuggy-boot, and is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of acarriagebody,showing the improved cover at the rear of the seat. Fig. 2 shows one of the turn-buttons attached at the back base of the seat. Fig. 3 is a cross-section of the back base-bar, and shows the turn-button holding the cover. Fig. dis a section of a piece of the carriagebody and shows one of the cover-pins occupying a metal socket in the said body. Fig. 5 is aview of the cover. Fig. 6 is a cross-section of the cover on the line 6 6.
The boot comprises the walls A of the buggy- 1 provide metal tubular sockets b, which are inserted in the top edge, 0, of the body-walls A. In practice these sockets will have such depth as may be deemed bestsay from three-fourths of an inch to two inches deep.
The back base-bar, d, of the seat has two or more turn-buttons, e.
The boot-cover'F may be made of leather or enameled cloth or other similar flexible material. It comprises two thicknesses or plies, g,with a border, h, on the four edges of three thicknesses. These border edges are made stiff by the insertion of a thickness of oil cloth, leather, or other suitable material, h, (shown in heavy black line in Fig. 6,) inserted between the said two outer plies, g,and the three thicknesses are held together by stitches r. At or near the middle of each border edge is a break or omission, j, of the said stiff insertion h, and thereby at such points the flexibility of the ,cover is unimpaired, and the cover with a stiff border may be folded twice-onee on the line xm and once on the line 3/ y-and thus reduce it to dimensions convenient for carrying in the box.
The cover F is provided with attached pins k, the heads of which are concealed in the stiff border edge h,which,being stiff,holds the pinhead securely. The pins 7c are always on and with the cover, whether the latter is stretched upon the boot or removed and folded away in the box. The cover has at its front edge a turn-down flap, Z, provided with two or more slits, 0, one for each turn-button e on the back base-bar. The cover thus has the front edge attached to the back base-bar, d, of the seat. The opposite or rear edge of the cover maybe raised or lowered like a hinged lid. Each pin it enters one of the metal sockets b, and serves to confine the cover on the top edge of the bodywalls A. No straps are used.
The cover does not come down on the side of the body-walls, and the stiff border edge prevents it from sagging. The device is sightly, neat, convenient to open or close, readily removed entire and folded up, and is cheap.
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The buggy-boot cover herein shown and dcscribed,consisting of flexible material g,having border edges h,made stiff by the insertion of suitable stiffening material, h, which is emitted at or near the middle of each edge, thereby to form a folding break, j, whereby the cover may be folded, as set forth.
2. The combination of the carriage-body walls provided in the edge with sockets b, the base-bar back of the seat,provided with turnbuttons 6, and a flexible boot-cover, F, having slits e,to take over the turn-buttons, and provided with pins is, attached by their heads to the cover, said pins being adapted to enter the sockets, as set forth.
