% siren STATES SAMUEL F. STEWART, OF PARIS, TEXAS.
COMBINED PEN OR PENCIL. HOLDER AND PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 387,187, dated July 31, 1888.
Application filed January 19, 1888. Serial No. 261,282. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, SAMUEL F. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Lamar and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Combined Pen or Pencil Holder and Pin, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined ornamental pin and holder for a pen, pencil, toothpick, or other similar article; and the invention consists in the construction of such pin and holder as hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the annexed drawings, illustrating the invention, Figure 1 is aside elevation of myimproved pen or pencil holder and pin attached to the clothing, and with pen or pencil in position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the holder. Fig. 3 is a rear view of the same with pin raised. Fig. 4 is a plan View of the blank from which the holder is formed.
In carrying my invention into effect I form a blank 01' the shape shown in Fig. 4 from goldplate or other suitable material. This blank comprises a body portion or bar 1, slightly tapering from end to end. On one end of this bar are lateral projections 2, that are to be bent backward to form logs or bearings 2 Figs. 1 and 3, for an attaching pin, and near the other end of the bar is a'projection, 3, to be bent backward for forming a catch, 3, to confine the end of said pin. Along one edge of the bar may be formed projections 4, to be bent into loops 4, for attachment of an ornamental chain or chains, bangles, or like ornaments. Each end of the bar 1 is provided with an arm, 5, extending laterally at a right angle and adapted to be bent into annular form, so as to constitute bands 5, Fig. 2, for receiving a pen, pencil, tooth-pick, orlike article. These bands, when bent into shape, may be rigidly secured to the bar 1; or they may be provided with a series of notches, 6, either one of which can be engaged with catches 7, formed on the ends of the holder. By this means said bands 5 can be readily adjusted and secured in place at any required point for the purpose of adapting them to receive and hold articles of different sary, by means of lugs 11 and 12 at each end diameters. If desired, any suitable ornament, as 8, may be formed on or attached to the front of one or both bands.
The bar 1 is cut near one end to form a spring, 9, that is arranged to bear against the pen, pencil, or other article inserted into the bands 5, and so prevent accidental endwise displacement of said article, while the bands serve to hold it from lateral displacement.
A pin, 10, is hinged or pivoted between the lugs 2 at one end of the holder, and serves to secure it in place when attached to the clothing.
It will be seen that this pin and holder not only forms a convenient receptacle for a pen or pencil, but that it is also adapted for use as an ornamental scarf or breast pin, and to this end the bands 5 maybe appropriately shaped to confine a stone or other setting, which can be held from endwise displacement, if neces 7c of the bar, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 4. When a pen or pencil is in place within the holder, the ornament 8, preferably in the form of an insect or flower, will occupy a nearly central position and add to the attractiveness of the device.
What I claim is- 1. A combined holder and pin consisting of the bar 1, provided with pin 10, and having at each end adjustable bands 5 adapted to receive a pen, pencil, or other article, substantially as described.
2. A combined holder and pin consisting of the bar 1, provided with pin 10, and having bands 5 spring 9, and loops 4, substantially as described.
3. A combined holder and pin consisting of the bar 1, provided with pin 10, and having catches 7 and adjustable bands 5, provided with notches 6, to engage said catches, sub- 0 stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SAMUEL F. STEXVART.
