SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 385,206, dated June 26, 1888.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, RAPHAEL THOMAS SEMMEs, of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Back-Band Hooks, of which the following is a'full, clear, and exact description. 7

This invention consistsin a back-band hook made of wire, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.

Figure 1 represents a face view of a backhand hook embodying myinvention as applied to a back-band, which is shown only in part, and Fig. 2 is a view in perspective of said hook.

A is the hook, which may be made of Va rions shapes; but the shape shown in the drawings will answer as well as any other to illustrate the invention.

B is the back-band, to which said hook is shown applied.

The hook Ais constructed of stout wire, and makes a much stronger one than a cast backband hook of the same weight, being twisted in such manner that increased strength is given to the hook at the points or places where the greatest strain and wear come. Thus the two end portions, a a, may be twisted with or upon the center-bar portion 1), and finally form the barbs c c, which hold the back-band in position, thereby making the center-bar portion, upon which the greatest strain comes, much stronger than other points of. the hook; and, furthermore, the hook proper or nose, at, of the whole hook upon which the trace-chain is fastened is also doubled and twisted, which gives greater thickness and strength where both wear and strain come. It will readily be seen how the hook may thus be made from a single'piece of wire of suitable length bent intermediate] y of its length and doubled and twisted upon itself to form the hook proper, d, the terminal portions of the wire being the barbs c 0. Thus from the hook proper, d, the left-hand length of the wire is run to form the left-hand side or brace e, and twisted and continued to fo rm th e one twist of the left-hand end portion, a, then continued to form the center bar, I), again twisted to give the one twist of the other or right-hand end portion, a, then continued to form the loopf, and finally twisted around the first twist of the left-hand end portion, a, and terminating in the left-hand barb, a, while the other or right-hand length of the wire after it leaves the hook proper, d, is continued to form the right-hand side or brace, e, and then twisted around the first twist of the righthand end portion, a, and finally terminating in the right-hand barb, c.

This description of how the back-band hook may be made from a single piece of wire and be doubled and twisted upon itself to give increased strength at the parts most exposed to strain and wear is not intended to restrict the construction, but only to show the preferred way. It may, however, be constructed in vari' ous other forms, the pri neipal feature ofthe invention being the twisting of two ends of the wire around the center bar, commencing at the ends of the center bar and terminating in the middle portion, as shown, with the barbs c c. \Vhether the loop f is made integrally with the hook proper or from a separate piece, the center bar may be formed integrally with either and the free ends of the other he twisted around it and form the barbs, as shown.

Having thus described my invention,whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. Aback-band hook made of wire, consist ing of a loop and a hook proper, and having the free ends 0 c twisted around the center bar, I), from its end to its middle portion and terminating in barbs, substantially as described.

2. A back-band hook made of a single piece of wire having its end portions, a a, doubled and twisted with the center-bar portion 1) and terminating in barbs c c, and having the hook proper or nose, (I, also doubled and twisted, es sentially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
