DRAPER, OF SAME PLACE.
ORNAMENTAL-CHAIN LINK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 294,734, dated March 4, 1884.
Application filed January 17, 1884. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY M. HERRING,
' of North Attleborough, in the county of Brising the fasteningwire.
tol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ornamental-Chain Links, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of one of my improved links, looking toward the loop. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the same, looking toward the ornamental filling. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a slightly modified form of the link, looking toward the loop. Fig. 4. is a side elevationof the same, looking toward the filling. Fig. 5 is alongitudinal section of a link, show- Fig. 6 is a similar view of a link, showing a modified form of fastening. Fig. 7 is a transverse section of a link, showing the arrangement of its parts.
My invention relates to links for watch and other ornamental chains 5 and the object of my invention is to simplify the same.
My invention consists in the provision of a link the sides of the loop of which. are closed by peculiar and novel ornamental fillings, and also in an improved fastening for the fillings, and in the combination of such parts with the connecting links or rings of the chain, as here inafter set forth.
In the said drawings, A designates the loop of the link, which may be either of greater width than thickness, as shown in Figs. 1 and and 2, or of greater thickness than width, as
the construction of 1 shown in Figs. 3 and 4. As shown in the drawings, the loopis formed with rounded ends, but such .form. may be changed as desired.
a B designates the ornamental fillings, each of which is. tubular in form, as shown in Fig. 7. Externally these fillings may be plain or ornamented with any desired design. Each 'end of the filling is formed with an oblique portion,
b, and extending from the retracted margin of such oblique cut is a slot, 1).
O designates the fastening-wire, and a designates the rings by which the link is connected to other links to form a chain.
I will now describe the manner of combining the several parts above specified, in order that the purpose of their formations may be apparent.
The fastening-wire O is first passed through one of the fillings B, and such filling is then placed in position beside the loop A. The protruding portion of the wire 0 is then passed through the other filling B, and the ends of such wire are either twisted together, as shown in Fig. 5, or one end of the wire is bent up over and against the other end, as shown in Fig. 6. The fastening as thus applied is completely concealed from view with- 6 in the fillings. The obliquely-cut ends I) of the fillings B lie against the sides of the rings a, so that no undesirable lateral movement of the fillings can occur. That one of the rings a which is contiguous to the ends of the fastening is put on the loop after the fastening has been applied. Thus it will be seen that I have devised a simple and durable arrangement, by means of which an ordinary openlink loop is caused to resemble closely a closed loop with ornamental sides.
The slots 12 may be dispensed with, if desired, without injury to the structure or its efficiency.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. An ornamental-chain link consisting of an open loop and separate fillings secured to the sides of said loop by a concealed wire fastening.
2. In an improved ornamental-chain link, the combination, with an open link and its connecting-rings, of fillings arranged to fit the sides of said link and formed with obliquelycut ends adapted to rest against the sides of said rings, and a wire fastening for said fillings.
3. The combination, with the loop A and its rings a, of the tubular fillings B, having the oblique ends b, and the wire fastening O, 5
all constructed and arranged substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the loop A and its rings a, of the fillings B, having oblique ends I) and slots 12, and the fastening 0, all con- 10:) structed and arranged substantially as describe'd.
HENRY M. HERRING. Witnesses:
WVALTER E. BARDEN, FRED B. BYRAM.
