PATENT HENRY MORTIMER HERRING, OF NORTH ATTLEBOROUGH, MASSACHUSETTS,
ASSIGNOR TO OSCAR M. DRAPER, OF SAME PLACE.
WATCH-CHAIN BAR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 358,858, dated March 8, 18 87. Application filed January 5, 1887. Serial No. 223,428. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HENRY MORTIMER HER- RING, of North Attleborough, in the county of ;Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watch-Chain Bars; and I do hereby declare that the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, is a full, clear, and exro act description thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap, and secure means for attaching the bands to watch-chain bars; and the invention consists in the novel construction and r 5 combination of parts hereinafter described.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents, in perspective, a watchchain bar without a band. Fig. 2 represents the blank from which the band is made. Fig. 3 represents the bar with the band secured thereto; and,
Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of Fig. 3, showing how the band is combined with the bar.
A represents a watch-chain bar, provided with the central mortise, a.
B is a band, by means of the eye in which the bar is to be attached to a watch-chain. This band is first formed as a flat blank, as shown in Fig. 2, which blank may be stamped out of sheet metal in the form required or shaped in any other suitable way. This blank is provided at one end with the eye I) and at the other with the tongue 0, as shown in the drawings. To combine this band with the bar A, the tongue 0 is inserted in the mortise a of the bar, and the blank is then wrapped around the bar so as to encircle the same, when it may be swaged so as to clamp the bar tightly, all
as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4:. By this construction and arrangement the bands may 0 be attached to the bars very easily and quickly and at a small cost. The use of solderis entirely dispensed with, and the necessity of subsequent burnishingor polishingis thusavoided, and at the same time, by the interlocking of the tongue upon the band with the mortise in the bar, the band is prevented both from turning around the bar and from sliding longitudinally thereon.
What I claim as my invention, to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improvement in the manufacture of watch-chain bars, which consists in constructing the central band with a tongue at one end and an eye at the other, inserting the tongue in a mortise in the bar, wrapping the band around the bar, and swaging the same against the bar, substantially as described.
2. A Watch-chain bar having a central mortise therein and a band furnished with an eye wrapped around the bar and held by a tongue interlocking with the mortise in the bar, substantially as described.
HENRY MORTIMER HERRING.
