Description

ROBERT J. POND.
Improvement in Jewelry Fastenings.
No. 122,192. Patented Dec-26, 1871.
umtur:
. proper connection of UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT. JAMES POND, OF NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO HODENPYL, TUNI- SON 8t 00., OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN JEWELRV-FASTENING S.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,192, dated December 26, 1871.
Specification describing a certain Improved Safety-Snap for Jewelry, invented by ROBERT JAMES POND, of the city, county, and State of New York.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved safety-snap. Fig. '2 is a longitudinal, and Fig. 3 a transverse section of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new snap-lockv for use on gold chains, bracelets, amulets, and similar articles of jewelry; and has for its object. to insure a firm connection which'cannot open in .spontaneous manner.
Gold chains are often loaded to such an extent that the snap must be fully reliable to insure a the ends. Bracelets, too, are subject to strain, andgenerally give way at the snap.
My invention consists in making the snap and spring of one continuous piece, which is inclosed within a tube and provided with a knob, as hereinafter more fully described.
A in the drawing represents the snap; B, the inclosing-tube G, a portion of the chain, amulet, bracelet, or other thing connected with the snap; a, the knob for opening the latter. The snap is formed of metal wire or rod, shaped similar to a figure 8, or rather to an O flattened at the sides. It is entirely closedi. 6., without ends-before being fitted into the tube, and is then soldered or otherwise fastened within the tube with one side only. The tube is so much shorter than the wire or piece A that the loop-shaped ends of the latter project from it. At one end the wire or piece A is then cut, as at I) in the drawing. This converts the straight part c, which is on the unfastened side of the wire or piece A to form the snap, while the other round part 01 is the frame of snap, the loop 6 at the other end becoming the spring of snap. A knob, a, projects either didirectly from the snap proper outside of the tube or from the straight part 0 through a slot of the tube, as shown. The loop e constitutes, also, the fixed fastening for end of the chain or article 0. The snap cannot open spontaneously, and is extremely simple in. make and symmetrical in appearance. The tube B may be cylindrical, as shown, or prismatic, or of other suitable form in construction.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The continuous snap A, arranged within the tube B and made substantially as herein shown and described.
