Description

PATENT OFFICE.
JOHNBARCLAY, OF PROVIDENCE RHODE ISLAND.
BRACELET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 236,975, dated January 25', 1881.
Application filed April 29, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BARGLAY, of the city and county oi' Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelets; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description oi the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of .this specification.
to This invention has reference to an improvement in the device for securing bracelets; and it,consists in a hinged buckle having a downwardly-extended fixed pin, combined with a hollow shank, which is secured to one end of 1 5 the band or chain of which the bracelet is made, and receives the buckle loosely to permit of its movement to insert or remove the said xed pin to fasten or loosen the band or' chain, as hereinafterspecied and claimed.
2o Figure l isa lperspective View of a bandbracelet provided with my improved buckleslide. Fig. 2 is aperspective view ofthe buckle. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, showing the wire buckle hinged in a tubular shank secured to one end of the band and a pin entered into a hole on the other end of the band. Fig. 4 is a view of a stamped sheet-metal buckle provided with a pin. Fig. 5 is a sectional view, showin g the application ofthe buckle to achain,
and Fig. 6 represents a chain-bracelet provided With eyelets into which the pin enters.
In the drawings, a alare the bands or chains forming the bracelets, provided with holes or eyelets b, or when the band is made ont of an 3 5 open chain the pin can enter the chain proper.
c isa hinged buckle, to the forward end of which the pin d is secured. The buckle is hinged in a hollow shank, e,secured to one end of the band or chain. For a bracelet this' arrangement is more convenient than other devices heretofore used. The band can be readily passed through the buckle until it ts the arm, and the pin enters into a hole orinto the meshes ofthe chain, and when the band is to be removed, by lifting thefree end ofthe buckle the pin is withdrawn and the band can be removed.
The device presents a finished and ornamental appearance, is simple in construction, strong, and durable.
Heretofore bracelets have been provided with a flat or curved piece of metal having a transverse slot for the passage oT one end of the bracelet, and provided with fixed pins or studs for engagement with the ends of the bracelet to fasten them; also, they have been provided with a rigidly-affixed buckle having a hinged tongue; and, also, they have been made with a hinged buckle, or a buckle* loop having a rigidly-axed false and inoperative tongue, such loop being pivoted or journaled by a cross-bar or shank in a loop affixed to the bracelet, and such shank bearin g a fixed pin or stud moving with the buckle or loop.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hinged buckle c and its downwardlyextendingxed pin r1, in combination with the hollow shank-e, secured to one end of the band or chain, and receiving the buckle loosely to permit oi' its movement to insert or remove the said xed pin to fasten or loosen the band or chain, substantially as described.
JOHN BARGLAY.
