UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOUIS LENAU, OF NORTH ATTLEBOBOUGH, ASSIGNOB TO E. WHITNEY &
(30., OF ATTLEBOROUGI-I FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
BRACELET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 349,803, dated September 28, 1886.
Application filed June 5, 1886. Serial No. 204,272. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, LOUIS LENAU, a citizen of the United States, residing at North Attleborough, in the county of Bristol and State of 1\Ia ssachusetts, haveinvented a new and useful Improvement in Bracelets; and I do hereby declare the following specification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same, to be a description IO thereof.
This invention relates to that variety of bracelets which are made selfclosi n g by means of a spring; and the improvement consists in certain features of construction and arrangement hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a top view of a bracelet embodying the invention. Fig. 2 shows a side view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a section of the same on line X X of Fig. 2, with the cap-pieces removed from the ends of the tubes. Fig. 4 shows a transverse section on line Y Y. Fig. 5 represents a portion of one of the wings or sections in perspective. Fig. 6 shows the 2 5 spring for closing said wings orsections. Fig.
7 shows a transverse section on lineZ Z.
The bracelet is composed of two wings or sections, A A, which may be of any preferred material, be solid or hollow, and have any preferred form of cross-sectionas round, oval, square, &'c. To the inner ends of these wings, and preferably to the under side thereof, are respectively secured the tubes or barrels B B, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, 4, and 5,- the outer ends of which tubes are provided with slots 1) 1),
respectively.
The spring D, for closing the bracelet, is of spiral form, and is located within the tubes B B, as shown in Fig. 4., has its ends bent or 40 formed into eyes (I d, and is secured to the tubes B B by pins E E, passing through said eyes and through the slots 1) b. As shown inthe drawings, this spring forms the joint or pivot of the bracelet, and in'order to prevent the spring from being accidentally bent laterally, and to strengthen the joint, a pin, F, is placed within the spring, as shown in Fig. 4., longitudinally of the same. Cap-pieces G G arerespectively secured to the outer ends of so the tubes B B, so as to cover the slots 1) b and the pins E E from View. The free ends of the wings may abut, and thereby form a stop to hold the wings in a proper closed position;
' wings.
but preferably there are employed stops H H, respectively securedto the wings on the under side thereof, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, 5, 7, and the outer ends of said stops are preferably bent upwardly, so as partially to embrace the wings when the latter are closed,
and thereby prevent any possible lateral sep- 6) aration of the wings when in said position.
As hereiubefore stated, I prefer to'secure the tubes B B to the wings A A on the under side thereof, for such a construction enables the tops of said wings to be provided with continuous ornaments, as shown in Fig. 1, the said tubes in no way-interfering with such a continuous ornamentation, which is a desirable feature.
I am aware that bracelets have heretofore been made having tubes secured to the inner ends of the wings, respectively, and a spiral spring located in said tubes for closing-the I do not, therefore, broadly claim such a construction.
NVhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. The combination, with the wings A A, provided with the tubes B B, attached thereto and having slots 1) b, of the spring D, having eyes (I d at its ends, the pins E E, passing through said eyes and slots and holding the spring in place, the pin F, located within said spring, and the caps G G, attached to said tubes, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the wings A A, provided with the tubes B B, attached there; to and having slots 1) b, of the spring D, having eyes d d at its ends, the pins E E, passing through said eyes and slots and holding the spring in place, the pin F, located within said spring, andthe caps G G and stops H H, attached to said tubes, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the wings A A, of the tubes B B, secured to the under side thereof, respectively, and having slots I) I),
LOUIS LENAU.
