No.197,655. Pafented Nov. 27,1877.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID D. NEVINS, OF ATTLEBOROUGH FALLS, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ORNA MENTAL CHAINS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 197,655, dated November 27, 1877 application filed October 6, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID D. NEVINS, of Attleborough Falls, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chains, of which the following is a specification:
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side view of a portion of my improved chain. Fig. 2 is a cross-section of the same, taken through the line a0 at, Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 is a detail view, showing a modified form of link.
Similar letters ofreference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved chain for watch-guards, necklaces, &c., which shall be simple in construction, and neat and highly ornamental in appearance.
The invention consists in a chain composed of links formed of short pieces of wire, having loops made in their middle parts, and having their ends bent outward, rearward, and inward to form rings or loops, as hereinafter fully described.
The chain is made of links A, of round or flat wire, which is cut into pieces of suitable length. The middle parts of the pieces of wire are bent into loops a of semicircular, a
little more than semicircular, or a U form. The ends of the pieces of wire are then bent outward, rearward, and inward to form rings, eyes, or loops a In forming the chain, the loops at of two links, A, are passed through the eyes or loops at of two other links, A. The eyes or loops at of the two latter links are then brought together, and the loops a of two other links are passed through them, and so on until a chain of the desired length has been formed.
The links A may be made of wire, plated with gold or silver, of solid gold or silver wire,- or of wire of any other material or composition.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A chain composed oflinks A, formed of short pieces of wire, having loops a made in their middle parts, and having their ends bentoutward, rearward, and inward to form rings or loops a substantially 'as herein shown and described. 0
