Definitions

  • a terminal strip comprises a U-shaped bar of insulat- Sept. 10, 1971 Sweden 11549/71 material ha ing a and o branches with sol- 52 us.
  • the present invention relates to a terminal strip or the like of the type which is preferably intended for automatic telephone exchanges and more particularly for interconnections to be made from the multiple fields of group selectors and the like.
  • Terminal blocks in telephone exchanges are to a great extent made of terminal strips consisting of rectangular bars of insulating material, in which are provided soldering tags.
  • the terminal blocks also have different flutes and guides arranged between the terminal strips, so-called wire guides for assembling and guiding the wires which are connected to the soldering tags of the terminal strips.
  • These terminal blocks take up large space in the racks included in a telephone exchange, while at the same time they must be within reach from both side of the rack.
  • An object of the present invention is to provide a terminal strip which occupies relatively small space and which eliminates the demand for flutes and guides.
  • FIG. 1 shows a terminal strip in cross-section
  • FIG. 2 shows a part of the terminal strip in plan view while FIG. 3 shows the same part in side view
  • FIG. 4 shows a group of terminal members.
  • FIG. 1 which shows the terminal strip in crosssection
  • a bar of insulating material is indicated by reference 1, formed as a U-shaped flute comprising a rib and two branches.
  • a terminal member cast into the bar is indicated by reference 2, the end parts 3a and 3b of which are formed into soldering tags and are arranged on the outsides of the two branches.
  • FIG. 2 a part of the terminal strip is shown in plan view and with a part of the terminal members uncovered.
  • the terminal members are punched from metal ribbons and are connected to each other during the production in groups of six by means of bridges 4, which, when the terminal strip is completed, are punched or bored away through holes 5 in the strip.
  • FIG. 3 shows in side view the same part of the terminal strip as FIG. 2.
  • the soldering tags 3 of the terminal members are arranged in rows and columns. The columns form an angle with the edges of the strip, making it possible to use bare wire connections with straight conductors between the soldering tags belonging to the same row as well as between similar placed tags in strips arranged above each other.
  • notches 6 are arranged in the branches of the terminal strip in order to make it possible to connect the conductors which are drawn inside the cable-flute formed strip to the soldering tags.
  • the terminal members are punched from a metal band or ribbon, and form also after the punching, a band since they are connected with each other by means of bridges 4.
  • the terminal members in such a band are then divided in groups comprising six members.
  • FIG. 4 shows such a group. Before the casting into the strip, the group goes through two bending operations. The first bending occurs along the lines BB, the soldering tags 3 being bent at right angles from the observer. In the second bending along the lines A--A the end parts are bent at right angles towards the observer. After the two bending as is apparent in FIG.
  • each of the soldering tags within the group lies in a different level compared with the central parts of the terminal members in such a manner that the soldering tag which lies highest in the one branch of the strip is connected to the one which lies lowest in the opposite branch of the strip and vice versa.
  • This technique permits the use of only one type of terminal members.
  • the technique also permits the soldering tags at the initial punching to form an angle with the central parts of the members so that the soldering tags can have a width which is as large as or larger than the space graduat between the members.
  • the design of the strip can of course be varied within wide limits and still fall within the scope of the invention.
  • the strip instead of producing the strip with terminal members cast in the strip these can be put in grooves in the strip.
  • the strip is then cast preferably in the form of an oblong plate of thermoplastic with transverse grooves for the terminal members in which grooves openings for the soldering tags are arranged.
  • the terminal member groups are bent only along the lines B-B before they are put in the intended grooves.
  • the oblong plate is furthermore provided with line-formed notches at the transition between rib and branches of the strip, along which notches the plate as well as the terminal members are bent in the same operation at a suitable temperature with reference to the plastic material in the plate.
  • a terminal strip comprising a channel member of insulating material defining a channel for cables, said channel member having a rib and two branches such that the cross-section of the channel member is U- shaped, at least one group of parallel terminal conductors within said channel member, each of said conductors extending within each branch and the rib in a direction transverse to the axis of the channel member, and each of the ends of each of said terminal connectors being a soldering tag portion extending perpendicular to the branch and in a direction away from the channel defined by said channel member.
  • soldering tag portions extending from one branch are progressively positioned at different increasing distances from the rib whereas the soldering tag portions extending from the other branch are progressively positioned in the opposite order at different increasing distances from the rib.
  • each branch is provided with at least one opening per group of parallel terminal conductors to permit the passage of cable from within the defined channel to the soldering tags.
  • terminal strip of claim 1 further comprising bridges interconnecting the portions of the terminal conductors within said rib, and guide means in said rib for locating each of said bridges so that the bridges can be opened at a later time to electrically separate the parallel conductors from each other.
