J. COYLE.
DEVICE FOR HITOHING ANIMALS. No. 379,103. 8 Patented Mar. 6, 1888.
\VITNESXE: I \NVENTEIFY A MM%M, A 4%.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JAMES OOYLE, OF LANCASTER, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF TWO-THIRDS TO CLARENCE W. SADLER AND JOSEPH HENRY GILES, BOTH OF SUTTER GREEK, CALIFORNIA.
DEVICE FOR HITCHING ANIMALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 379,103,dated March 6,1888.
Application filed October 26, 1886. Serial No. 217,222.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES OoYLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lancaster, in the county of Lancaster and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Devices for Hitching Animals, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved device to take the place of the hitch- Io ing-posts now in use, which shall be buried and kept entirely in the ground at all times, so as to be out of the way, but having its top level with the surface, and which shall be simple in construction and inexpensive in manufacture.
I 5 This object I accomplish by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a top view of my invention; Fig. 2, a vertical section through the same, show- 2 o ing the disposition of the chain when not in use; and Fig. 3 avertical section showing the chain drawn out.
Similar-letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
The invention consists of a hollow box or case provided with a basin in the top, an inner flange for supporting said basin, and outer flanges to keep the case in position in the ground, with a chain secured to the bottom of the case and passing upward through an opening in the basin and provided with a snaphook at its outer end, and of sufficient length to reach from the bottom of the caseto the head of the horse to be hitched.
3 5 A represents the hollow case, which is sunk in the ground, with thetop surface, a, of the upper flange, B, flush with the pavement. The flanges B and O serve to preserve the case in a fixed vertical position. Other flanges,
4c similar to C, may be used as circumstances require. Around the inner face of the case,
somewhat below the top, there is a bearingflange, E, which supports the bowl G, having a flange, F, constructed to rest upon the flange 4 5 E, and having its upper face level with the top of the case, the two flanges being connected by screws f, or other suitable means. The bowl (No model.)
is sufficiently large to afford ample room for receiving a snap-hook, h, on the outer end of the chain H, and has an opening, 9, in thebottom through which said chain passes.
The horse is hitched by means of the chain H, firmly secured to the bottom of the case and passing upward through the opening in the bottom of the bowl. The case is of such depth that when the chain is loosened from a horse there is sufficient length inside to afford weight to readily draw the outer end in, it being held momentarily somewhat -0"6I the opening in the bowl by the person using it. The snap- 6c hook is received by the bowl and prevents the outer end of the chain from passing through the opening into the case, and it also serves as a handle by which to draw the chain out for use. r 6
Holes K may be made in the bottom of the case to permit the escape of water.
I wish it understood that I do not confine myself to the exact construction and arrangement of details as herein described, as many changes may be made therein without affecting the spirit of myinvention.
WhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination of the hollow case A, chain H, permanently secured by one end to the bottom of the case and having the other end supplied with the snap-hook h, with the covering-bowl G, having the opening substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the hollow case A, having the bearing-flange E, the bowl G, having the flange F, constructed to fit over the said flange E, and the opening 9, to permit the operation of the chain H, and the chain H, 85 permanently fastened by one end to the bottom of the case and having the snap-hook h at the other end, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
JAMES COYLE.
