PUMP ANTIFREEZIN G ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 19118.
Application filed June 5, 1917. Serial No. 172,875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it remembered that I, WALTER J1m- KINS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Madison township, in the county of Riley and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pump Antifreezing Attachments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in attachments for preventing the water from freezing in pumps and the object is to so construct such a device that it may be readily attached to the pipe connected with an ordinary pump and operated from above the surface of the ground or platform.
I attain this object by means of the mechanism hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,-
Figure l is a view of a vertical section of pipe with my invention attached;
Fig. 2, a view of the plate and mechanism on reverse side of the pipe shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, a side view of my device attached to the pipe broken away at the vent with the plug in position to close the same when released;
Fig. 4, a horizontal sectional view of my device through w-w of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views.
The well-pipe 1 is provided with an ordinary vent 8 at a sulficient distance below the surface of the ground to permit the escape of all water above the freezing point. To said pipe 1, by means of clevises 2, is secured plate 3 provided with slot 4 and to which, at 6, is secured one end of strapspring 5. A plug or stopper 7, preferably of a resilient material, is secured to the under surface of said spring near its farther end and positioned opposite to the vent 8. To said plate 3, by means of recessed straps 9 and across the slot 4:, is secured crank 10 to which crank and beneath said spring is secured the eccentric block 11 in such a po sition as to allow the plug 7 to close said vent when at rest and to raise said spring and withdraw said plug when said crank and block are given a half turn. This is accomplished by means of rod 12 pivotally secured to wrist 13 of crank 10. Said rod being extended above the surface or platform enables the person to readily operate my device. The method of operation is ob vious.
Some of the advantages of my invention are its simplicity of construction and attachment, its effectiveness, and its easy operation from the platform.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A device of the class described comprising a pipe provided with a vent a slotted plate secured to said pipe, a plug in alinement with the slot in said plate and with said vent, means for automatically forcing said plug into said vent, a block eccentrically secured to a shaft journaled in said plate, means for revolving said block to remove said plug from said vent and to release the same.
