- roller devices In the drafting or drawing of textile fibers to produce yarn, sliver, roving, and the like, roller devices have been used previously which are comprised of an elongated supporting roller having a radially stretchable tubular cot adhesively fastened in position therearound utilizing various types of adhesive.
- This invention provides an improved drafting roller construction which comprises an elongated supporting roller having an outside cylindrical surface and a pinrality of axially spaced circumferential grooves extending inwardly from the outside surface and the construction also comprises a cot having an inside surface defined by a plurality of continuous alternating channels and projections extending along its full length.
- the cot is fixed to the roller with adhesive means which also defines a plurality of high strength ridges on the roller and a plurality of interlocks with each interlock extending into the cot and roller at the junction of each groove and channel to assure that the cot is fixed securely in position relative to the roller.
- FIG. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the roller and cot of FIG. 1 after assembly thereof;
- FIG. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken essentially on the line 3--3 of FIG. 2;
- FIG. 4 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken essentially on the line 4-4 of FIG. 2;
- FIG. 5 is a perspective view similar to FIG. 1 illustrating a fragmentary portion of a supporting roller and a cot having an inside surface defined by a plurality of channels and projections which extend in a substantially helical path around the longitudinal axis of such cot;
- FIG. 6 is a perspective view illustrating another exemplary embodiment of a supporting roller which may be used interchangeably with either the supporting roller of FIG. 1 or FIG. 5.
- FIG. 2 of the drawing illustrates one exemplary embodiment of a drafting or drawing roller construction of this invention which is designated generally by the reference numeral 10 and the construction 10 is particularly adapted for the drafting or drawing of textile fibers or the like to produce sliver, roving, yarn, etc., in accordance with techniques which are well known in the textile industry.
- the construction 10 comprises an elongated supporting roller 11, see FIG. ll, having an outside right circular cylindrical surface 12 and a plurality of axially spaced circumferential grooves 13 extending inwardly from the surface 12.
- the exemplary roller 11 may have a pair of shaft portions each designated by the reference letter S extending from its opposite ends and such shaft portions have a right circular cylindrical configuration and may be provided as an integral part of the roller 11 as a single piece construction or provided as separate members and suitably fixed thereto using any technique known in the art.
- the shaft portions S rotatably support the roller 11 and hence the entire construction 110 in a manner which is well known in the art and on associated supporting structure.
- a textile cot 14 is provided and has an inside surface designated generally by the reference numeral 15 and such surface is defined by a plurality of parallel alternating channels 16 and projections 17 which in this example extend along the full axial length of the cot l4 and parallel to a central longitudinal axis A of the cot which is also the longitudinal axis of the construction 10.
- the cot l4 and roller 11 are fixed together by a suitable adhesive means or adhesive and as will now be described in detail.
- adhesive 20 With the cot l4 installed in position adhesive 20 is forced into the space defining channels 16 and such adhesive adheres tenaciously to the roller 11 and defines a plurality of high strength ridges 21 of adhesive with each ridge having an inverted configuration defined by the configuration of an associated groove 16 and in this example such configuration is an inverted V-shaped configuration, see FIGS. 3 and 4.
- the adhesive 20 also provides an interlocking adhesive structure or interlock 22 at the junction of each groove 13 and channel 16 and each adhesive structure 22 extends into both the cot l4 and roller 11.
- the adhesive 20 provides an define the entire inside surface 15 of the cot 14 as an undulating or saw-toothed surface.
- the channels 16 need not necessarily be provided so that they cooperate with projections or ridges 17 to define a saw-toothed surface but such channels and ridges may be provided to define toothed surfaces having other configurations and the channels may be spaced at comparatively wide intervals, if desired.
- the grooves 13 are provided in the cylinder or roller 11 along substantially the full axial length thereof and each immediately adjacent pair of grooves may be spaced the same axial distance 24 along the roller.
- Each groove 13 may have a roughly semicircular crosssectional configuration, as illustrated at 25 in FIG. 3, or may have any suitable polygonal cross-sectional configuration, such as rectangular, for example.
- FIG. of the drawing Another exemplary embodiment of the roller construction of this invention is illustrated in FIG. of the drawing.
- the roller construction illustrated in FIG. 5 is very similar to the roller construction therefore, such roller construction will be designated generally by the reference numeral 10A and parts of the construction 10A which are similar to corresponding parts of the construction 10 will be designated by the same reference numeral as in the construction 10 also followed by the letter designation A and not described again. Only those component parts or portions which are different from corresponding parts of the construction 10 will be designated by a new reference numeral also followed by the letter designation A and described in detail.
- the construction 10A differs from the construction 10 primarily in the inside surface A of the cot 14A.
- the cot 14A has channels 26A and projections 27A which extend in a substantially helical or spiral path around such longitudinal axis.
- the roller 11A is substantially identical to the roller 11 and has grooves 13A which extend inwardly therein from its cylindrical surface 12A; and, roller 11A also has either integral or detachably fixed shaft portions S extending from its opposite ends.
- Each roller 11 and 11A may be made of any suitable high strength material and is preferably made of a suitable metallic material such as steel. Further the main central portion of each roller 11 and 11A may be provided as a single piece structure and has its respective grooves 13 and 13A suitably formed therein by machining or the like.
- roller 11 or 11A need not necessarily be provided as a single piece construction, with shaft portions S extending from its opposite ends, but such roller may be modified so that it is defined by a plurality of components and such a modified roller is shown in FIG. 6 of the drawing and designated by the reference numeral 11M.
- the roller 11M is substantially identical to the rollers 11 and 11A as to its functional or operating characteristics and hence may be used interchangeably therewith; however, such roller has a central core 30M and a tubular sleeve 31M detachably fixed concentrically around the core 30M.
- the core 30M and sleeve 31M are made of suitable high strength materials and the sleeve 31M is detachably fixed concentrically around and coaxially with the core 30M by a plurality of fastening devices 32M which may be in the form of pins, screws, or the like which hold the sleeve 31M in position against radial and axial movements.
- the sleeve 31M has an outside right circular cylindrical surface 12M and a plurality of annular grooves 13M which extend inwardly from such surface and the grooves 13M are arranged in equally spaced relation along the roller 11M.
