  • roller devices In the drafting or drawing of textile fibers to produce yarn, sliver, roving, and the like, roller devices have been used previously which are comprised of an elongated supporting roller having a radially stretchable tubular cot adhesively fastened in position therearound utilizing various types of adhesive.
  • This invention provides an improved drafting roller construction which comprises an elongated supporting roller having an outside cylindrical surface and a pinrality of axially spaced circumferential grooves extending inwardly from the outside surface and the construction also comprises a cot having an inside surface defined by a plurality of continuous alternating channels and projections extending along its full length.
  • the cot is fixed to the roller with adhesive means which also defines a plurality of high strength ridges on the roller and a plurality of interlocks with each interlock extending into the cot and roller at the junction of each groove and channel to assure that the cot is fixed securely in position relative to the roller.
  • FIG. 2 is a perspective view illustrating the roller and cot of FIG. 1 after assembly thereof;
  • FIG. 3 is a fragmentary cross-sectional view taken essentially on the line 3--3 of FIG. 2;

  • the shaft portions S rotatably support the roller 11 and hence the entire construction 110 in a manner which is well known in the art and on associated supporting structure.
  • a textile cot 14 is provided and has an inside surface designated generally by the reference numeral 15 and such surface is defined by a plurality of parallel alternating channels 16 and projections 17 which in this example extend along the full axial length of the cot l4 and parallel to a central longitudinal axis A of the cot which is also the longitudinal axis of the construction 10.
  • the cot l4 and roller 11 are fixed together by a suitable adhesive means or adhesive and as will now be described in detail.
  • adhesive 20 With the cot l4 installed in position adhesive 20 is forced into the space defining channels 16 and such adhesive adheres tenaciously to the roller 11 and defines a plurality of high strength ridges 21 of adhesive with each ridge having an inverted configuration defined by the configuration of an associated groove 16 and in this example such configuration is an inverted V-shaped configuration, see FIGS. 3 and 4.

  • the channels 16 need not necessarily be provided so that they cooperate with projections or ridges 17 to define a saw-toothed surface but such channels and ridges may be provided to define toothed surfaces having other configurations and the channels may be spaced at comparatively wide intervals, if desired.
  • the grooves 13 are provided in the cylinder or roller 11 along substantially the full axial length thereof and each immediately adjacent pair of grooves may be spaced the same axial distance 24 along the roller.
  • Each groove 13 may have a roughly semicircular crosssectional configuration, as illustrated at 25 in FIG. 3, or may have any suitable polygonal cross-sectional configuration, such as rectangular, for example.
  • FIG. of the drawing Another exemplary embodiment of the roller construction of this invention is illustrated in FIG. of the drawing.
