Description
(ModeL) J. BORGERSEN. vHINGED GOVER FOR BOOKS AND ALBUMS.
Patented Dec. 20
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN BORGERSEN, or CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
HINGED COVER FOR BOOKS AND ALBUMS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 375,044. dated December 20, 1887.
Application filed December 251, 1885. Serial No. 187,018. (Modeh) To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that 1', JOHN BORGERSEN, of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Hinged Cover for Books and Albums, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enable others to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification. I
The object of this invention is to providea hinged cover for books, which will render the same more durable and flexible at the joints.
This improvement is more especially intended for books and albums having covers and backs made of wood or other suitable material that will provide a good holding-sun face for the hinge attachment.
Figure 1. is an end view in perspective of a book, showing the hinge attachment; Fig. 2, a transverse section showing the jointed relation of the covers and backs; Fig. 3, a section detail showing the manner of attaching the pivot-strap; Fig. 4, aperspective of the pivot strap. Fig. 5 shows the covers thrown open; Fig. 6, a face view of the hinge-plate, showing ajoint in the center; Fig. 7, an edge view and partial section of the same; and Fig. 8 shows the back of a book constructed in two parts and jointed together, as shown.
Referring to the drawings,'A represents the leaves of a book or album, 13 B the two covers, and O the back.
The covers and back of the book are in this case made of wood, the back edges, a, of the cover being rounded and fitted into the correspondingly-shaped grooves or recesses a in the edges of the back 0, thus "forming ajointed connection and bearing for these parts, which extends the entire length of the back. The pivot strap or straps G are provided with the pivot pin or post a", and are of the form shown in Fig. 4. A number of these straps are used on each book, and are perforated for the in sertion of the attaching-screws, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The eurvedhinge-strap D (see Fig. 1) is secured to the ends of the back by means of the screws 1), the rounded ends of the hinge being perforated for engagement with the pivot-pins a".
In the case of very heavy albums or books,
the hinge strap D may be constructed in two parts, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, having the pivot-pin b in the center. In using the double hinge the back will be constructed in two parts and these parts let into each other, as shown in Fig. 8. This form of back will allow the parts to move inwardly as the covers are opened, thus gradually conforming to the change of position and relieving the strain on the covers.
It will readily be seen that this arrangement forms a strong durable structure, the joints possessing great flexibility, and a free movement is imparted to the back and covers with out strain or stiffness.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 1. The combination, with the covers and back of a book, respectively rounded and recessed, of a pivot strap or straps provided with pivot pins or posts and secured to said covers, and a hingestrap adapted to engage with said pivot-pins, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the covers and back of a book, respectively rounded and recessed, of a pivot strap or straps provided with pivot pins or posts, and a curved hingestrap secured to said back and adapted to engage with said pivot-pins, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
8. I11 a book-cover, the combination, with the covers, of a pivot strap or straps, a back constructed in two parts and joined together, as described, and a hinge-strap having a pivotal movement in the center, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN BORG ERSEN.
