TABLE-LEAF SUPPORT.
sreorrrcarroiv forming part of Letters Patent; No. 373,813, dated November 29, 1887.
Application filed August 25, 1887. Serial No. 247,826. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK L. CASPER, of Howes Cave, in the county of Schoharie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Table-Leaf Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in table-leaf-supporting attachments; and the object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device for that purpose. This object I attain by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which are herein referred to and form part of this specification, and in wh1ch- Figure 1 is a vertical section of part of a table provided with my invention, showing the leaf raised and my support in side elevation; Fig. 2. alike section wit-h the leaf shown in a hanging position; Fig. 3, a front elevation of Fig. 1; Fig. 4, a transverse section of Fig. 1 at the line X X; and Figs. 5,6, and 7 are enlarged and detached details of the separate parts of my support.
As represented in the drawings, A indicates the table-top, B a leaf hinged to said top, and O the frame-work of the table. All of said parts are of an old and well-known construction and form no part of my invention.
D is rolling brace-bar having at one end a spring-limb, 1, which is provided with a locking-shoulder, 2, near its free end. Said brace is also provided on its end near said springlimb with a buttonhead, 3, and at'the opposite end with a journal, 4,'and a crank-handle, 5, by which a rolling motion can be imparted to said brace. The normal position of the latter is one where the spring-limb will lie directly above the body of the brace, as shown in Fig. 1.
E is a looped hanger which is secured to the underside of the leaf B,and in which the journal 4. of the brace D is fitted, so that said brace will be securely attached to the leaf thereby, but will be free to receive a rolling motion and a slight pendulous movement therein. Said'hanger' is provided with a spur or stop, 6, against which the crank-handle 5 engages to prevent the brace D from being rolled too far in that direction.
F is a bracket (shown in vertical section in Fig. 1) which is secured to the frame 0, and has a rearwardly-inclined portion, f, provided with a parallel slot, 7, that is closed at its lower end to form a loop in which the bracebar D will slide endwise. Said slot isextended upwardly in the plate of the bracket, and is there increased in size at one side by the curved enlargement 8 for the purpose of permitting the spring-limb of the brace-bar to pass freely therethrough in the operation of disengaging the support. A catchpiece, 9, is formed in the upper end of the enlargement of the opening, for the purpose of providing a striker with which the shoulder 2 of the brace-bar will engageto lock the support for holding the leaf B in its raised position, as shown in Fig. 1. d
The operation of my device is as follows: The leaf B being in a pendent position, as shown in Fig. 2, in raising said leaf the bracebar D will thereby be drawn endwise through the slotted opening of the bracket F, in which movement the button-head 3 will prevent said brace-bar from escaping from said opening, and will also prevent the leaf B from being raised too high, and when the rising movement of said leaf is nearly completed the lower edge of the catch-piece 9 will press the spring limb 1 downward until the shoulder 2 has passed under said catch-piece, and then the resilience of said spring-limb will instantly cause it to resume its normal position, and thereby the shoulder 2 will be engaged with the face of the catch-piece 9 to lock the device to support the leaf B in its raised position, as shown in Fig. 1. To lower the leaf B the brace-bar D must be rolled by. means of the orank-handle 5 until the shoulder 2 is clear from the catch-piece 9, as indicated by dotted circles in Fig. 4.. Thereupon the brace-bar D will freely slide inwardly through the slotted opening of the bracket F until the parts are returned to the positions shown in Fig. 2.
I claim as my invention a 1. In a table-leaf support, the combination of a rolling brace-bar provided with aspringlimb having a locking shoulder, as herein described, a looped hanger in which said bracebar is journaled to the table-leaf, and a slotted bracket provided with a catch piece with which the shoulder of the spring-limb engages, as herein set forth, the rolling movement of said brace-bar producing the unlocking of the device, as herein specified.
2. A table-leaf support consisting ofn rollwhich the shoulder of the spring-limb ening brace-bar, D. provided with a erank-hnngages, and from which said shoulder is disento die and aspring-limb having a loeking-shonlgnged by the rolling movement of the braceder, a looped hanger, E, by which said bracebar, as specified.
