new. JERSEY, AssIGNOR TO NEW YORK COUCH BED COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
' BED.
To all whom it may concern: i
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. SisBowER, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, in the county of Essex. and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'Beds, the following being a full, clear, and exact disclosure of the one form of my invention which I at present deem preferable.
For a detailed description of the present form of my invention, reference may be had to the following specification and to the accompanying drawing forming a part thereof, in whichb Figure l is a view of one end of my improved bed, Fig. 2 is an end elevationwith the leaf in an upright position, Fig. 3 is an end elevation with leaf in a horizontal position.
My invention relates to a bed-frame having two longitudinal leaves on either side, capable of being folded, one of them into either a horizontal or dropped position and the other into a horizontal, dropped or upright position. The last may be termed a three-position leaf. When both leavesare dropped a single couch or bed is formed, when both are horizontal a double bed. and when one is dropped and the other raised to an upright position it forms a couch with a back.
My invention concerns the devices for securing the leaves, particularly the threeposition one, in their several positions.
Referring to the drawing, A represents a bed-frame having at each end an end-bar a, legs a a and a brace bar a The two ends are connected by longitudinal side bars at, Along the rear edge of frame A is a folding leaf B adapted to rest in either an upright position (Figs. 1 and 2) a horizontal position (Fig. 3) or a dropped position (shown in dotted lines Fig. 2) and in either position it will be securely held in place. At the same time it can be shifted easily from one position to another. A curved brace D is pivoted at one end to the leaf B and at the otherv end passes through a slot in the leg a just above the point at i which the side-bar a is attached to the leg. At this inner end of brace D there is a notch (Z 011 its under side and also a lug cl loosely pivoted to the extremity of the brace. On the side bar a, opposite the curved brace D is a vertical flange E, forming a recess be- Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Dec, 29 1914, Application filed February 20 1911. Serial No. 609,710. I
,io. i.
tweenthe said flange and the side ofthe'leg I a In this recess the lug d is received when in its upright position. On theotherhand,
as the leaf is being raised to its upright position the lug will swing freely outward on its pivot until it is dragged across the upper edge of flange E when it will'swing inward onits pivot and drop into the recess back of theflange. The leaf B; is pivoted to the 7 frame A by a slotted hinge connection, the slot surrounding'the neck of pivot pin 6. Thus, when the leaf is-in itsnupright position, it can be lifted bodily a slight distance and so drawn away from the frame A carrying with it the brace D. This will raise the lug (Z out of the recess, so that the leaf can then be turned and lowered to dropped position, the brace D passing freely inward 3 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig.
2. If it is desired to have the leaf held in its horizontal position as in Fig. 3, the leaf after being lifted can be dropped when the notch cl comes opposite the flange E and the notch will engage the flange, as shown in Figs. 3, the leaf being thereby-arrested as'it is turned down to the horizontal position.
The leaf C on the front edge of frame A is only intended to assume the dropped p0 sition shown in Figs. land 2 or the horizontal position, and may be provided with any suitable devlce for securing it, suchv as the straight brace D with a notchc that will engage the lower edge of the slot in the leg a The lug 0 will, in that case, only serve to lift the brace to free the notch by resting on the upper. side of the side bar a when the leaf is lifted slightly above its horizontal position, thereby lifting the inner end of the brace when the leaf is subsequently lowered. This particular device is not claimed herein but forms the subiectof my application No- 515,148, filed August so, 1909. a v
.lVhat I claim as new anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A bed of the character described comprising a stationary frame, a leaf having a pivotal connection with said frame, a brace secured to said leaf, a flange carried by the stationary frame, a lug pivoted to said brace and cooperating with the latter and said flange to support said leaf in an upright position, said pivotal connection including means to permit a rectilinear movement of said leaf to disengage said lug from said flange.
2. A bed of the character described comprising a stationary frame, a leaf having a pivotal connection with said frame, a brace secured to said leaf, a flange arranged to engage said brace to support said leaf in a horizontal position, a lug pivoted to said brace and coiiperating with the latter and said flange to support said leaf in an upright position, means cooperating with said flange to prevent pivotal. movement of said lug when said leaf is in a vertical position, said pivotal connection including means to permit a rectilinear movement of said leaf to disengage said lug from the flange and said cotiperatin'g means.
3. A bed of the character described comprising a stationary frame, a leaf having a pivotal connection with said frame by a slotted hinge constructed to permit a recti- Coples of this patent may be obtained for linear movement of said leaf, a curved brace pivoted to said leaf, a flange arranged to engage said brace to support said leaf in a horizontal position, and a lug pivoted to said brace and cooperating with the latter and said flange to support said leaf in an upright position, said lug being disengaged from said flange by a rectilinear movement of said leaf.
41. A bed of the character described comprising a stationary frame, a leaf having a pivotal connection with said frame, a brace pivoted to said leaf, a lug pivoted to said brace, means cooperating with said lug and said brace to support said leaf in an upright position, and a pivotal connection between the frame and the leaf including L means to permit a rectilinear movement of the leaf to disengage said lug from the supporting means cooperating therewith.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, before two subscribing witnesses, this 17th day of February, 1911.
