SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 498,491, dated May 30,1893.

To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, JOHN J. RIDGWAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Door Checks and Locks, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention is designed as au improvement upon the device described and illustrated in my application for Letters Patent, filed August 20, 1892, Serial No. 441,125. In my former device covered by said application a chain was employed to operate the door check and the same could not` be operated with a key from without and the mechanism was somewhat complicated, and the devices were not adapted to the usual ,varieties of door trims or casings.
The object of my present invention is to adapt the parts to the trims or casing of doors, to reduce the noise incident to the operation of the mechanism, to close theY door unobstructed and also to be able to employ a key v inserted from the outside of the door to operate the mechanism, and also to so construct the mechanism that a chain will be unnecessary, and the parts will be in an advantageous place for being reached and grasped by the handand operated, and placed in the several positions desired.
In carrying out my invention I employ a slotted plate pivoted to an attaching plate and one or more auxiliary plates which act in connection with the said attaching plate when tthe same is secured to the casing or trim of a door. The slotted plate is made with a rubber buffer, the obj ect of which is to lessen the noise. Upon the door proper I provide a casing and attaching plate for a spring actuated T headed bolt and a second casing and attaching plate for a sliding spring actuated adjustable bar, the spring actuated bolt and spring actuated bar being connected by a rod. The casing containing the spring actuated bar has a mortise and the bar is provided with a finger button and a cross piece ywhich work in the mortise to provide three positions for the -mechanism which is adapted to be placed upon a door within easy reach of the hand, andi employ a key adapted to operate the slidingV spring actuated bar and T headed being connected to the molding.

c represents a casing and c an attaching plate connected therewith, the attaching plate being perforated for screws which secure the same upon the inner face of the door and ad` jacent to its upper corner. Within the casing c is the spring actuated bolt d. The opposite edges of said bolt are notched at 4, 5, near the end to form a T head. The office of this T head is to slide along through the slot of the plate a, and I have shown by dotted lines in Fig. 6 the several positions of this bolt-cl. The position 13 is when the bolt is drawn down to its full extent and is below the slotted plate where it bears no relation operatively to said plate. The position 14 is where the T head of the bolt cornes above the plate a and in which position the bolt freely slides back and forth in the slot of said plate. The position 15 is where the bolt is fully elevated, its main portion rising within any one of the three notches 1. This position is illustrated in Figs. 2 and 6. In this position the door would be secured or locked in its relation to the plate.

e represents a casing, and e an attaching plate connected therewith and provided with screw holes for screws by which it is attached tothe face of the door at a convenient height for the hand.
f represents a spring actuated sliding bar movable vertically through the casing e, and there is aback plate f behind the bar f and a blade spring 8 between the plate f and the back oase of e; this spring forces the plate f and bar e forward toward the front of the casing. The face of the casing e is mortised at 6 and provided with notches 7 at opposite sides of the mortise, and the sliding bar f is provided with a wedge-shaped notch 9, a cross piece 11 and a linger button 10, the cross piece 11 being adapted to lit within the notches 7 of the mortise in the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4: and I provide a hook 12 pivotally connected tothe lower end of thebarfwhose oftice is hereinafter described, and g represents a keywith a single bar g', see Figs. 3 and 4.
The operation of the parts is as follows: In the position shown in Fig. 1 the spring actuated bolt d is withdrawn into the casing c; the spring actuated sliding bar fis drawn down in the casing e with the hook 12 projected and caught against the lower edge of the casing. In this position the door A can be opened and shut freely without any reference to the slotted plate ct, and thesame can be locked or unlocked with a mortise lock of usual character. It' it is desired to leave a room or apartment so that it cannot be entered, but yet so that ventilation may he obtained, the hook 12 is uncaught when the door is open and the finger button 10 grasped and the bar fbrought into an intermediate position such as is shownV in Figs. 3 and 4, where the crosspiece 11 is projected by the spring 8 into the notches '7. In this position the upper end of the spring actuated bolt Cl l is in the position 14, Fig. 6. As the person leaves the apartment and closes the door, the T head of the bolt d raises the slotted plate as the door shuts, and said T head falls in behind the slot of said plate and within the openingoftheattachingplatebetweentheauxiliary plates b. If now the door is opened the notched'uppe'r end of the bolt d moves through the slot of the plate a until it strikes the rubber buffer, 2, at' which place the door will be securely held and cannot be farther opened without breaking the parts. In this position the door can be moved back and forth in the short range obtained between a shut position and the slightly open position against the buffer 2. With the parts in this position if a person desires to enter a room, he shuts the door, applies the key g from the outside and turns the bar g against the wedgeshaped notch 9; the action of this is to push the bar f backward, press the spring 8, withdraw the cross piece 11 from the notches 7 and then the end of the bar g will bear against the edge of the cross piece 11 and push the bolt bar f down into the casing and simultaneously withdraw the bolt d into the position shown in Fig. 1, when the door can be opened. If it is desired to lock the door from the inside, the linger button 10 is grasped and the parts are brought into the position shown in Figs. 3 and 4, when the door is'shut with the bolt d raised to an intermediate position; The door is thenopened, the head of the bolt d moving through the slot of the plate (t, and when one of the three intermediate notched places 1 is reached the linger button 10 is pressed inwardly and raised; this elevates the bolt d within one of the notched places 1 into the position 15 of Fig.'
6, wherein the door is substantially locked, that is to say, the spring actuated sliding bar fis at its highest point in the casing e where the bar g of the key cannot be brought to operate upon the wedge-shaped notch 9. In this position a door can be left slightly open all day or all night and ventilation obtained for an apartment with little or no liability of a person being able to enter.
1n some cases it may be desirable to operate the mechanism herein described solely from the outside of the door, asin sanitariums, hospitals, 85o.; in this case the finger' button 10 is removed or left oft' and the key alone is employed to operate the mechanism.
In Fig. 7 I have shown a modification of the slotted plate wherein the pivot of the plate is put nearer the top ofthe attaching plate so as to bring the back stopping edge IOC 16 of the slotted plate nearer to the attaching plate, so that there is less movement for the buffer 2 and auxiliary plate Z9 and the otherdevices herein set forth.
In the construction shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10, the attaching plate a is provided with slotted lugs t Zc Z in pairs and an open center. The pairs of lugs t' and Zt are on the same level at each side of the open center' and the pair of lugs Z are central of the plate al and above theopen center. The ends ofv theslotted plate a? adjacent to the attaching plate at are provided with lugs 20, 21 and pins 22 whichV pass through the lugs and into the slots of the pairs of lugs Zt and which move freely upv and down therein. I provide an arm m pivoted at one end at 18 to the outer end of the slotted plate a2 and the other end of this arm passes between the pair of lugs Z and is provided with a pin 23 adapted to move in the slots of said lugs Z.

When the door is shut from within it can also be substantially locked by projecting the bolt CZ to the highest position 15, the bolt then coming behind the attaching plate and between the auxiliary plates b, its stopping edge being the point 16 in Figs. 6, 7 and S, the construction Figs. 7 and 8 being more advantageous for this feature of the bolt than the construction Fig. 6 because there is less inotion possible tothe door.
A modification of the auxiliary plates Z) is shown in Fig. 1, Where the points b2 are dispensed with and the forward edges of the plates are elevated and provided with holes for the attaching screws which pass through the plate a', these attaching screws in this instance doing double duty. v
My improvements are in no manner connected with ordinary mortise locks for doors i nor do they detract fromthe use of such locks in securing a door in the well known usualmanner.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination in aV door check and lock with a spring actuated bolt having a yT head and means for retaining the same in its various positions, of an, attaching plate adaptand ed to be connected to a doorcasing, a slotted plate pivoted thereto and engaged bythe T head of the bolt., and a rubber buffer 2 secured near the outer end of-the slotted plate and against Vwhich the T head of the bolt stops, substantially as set forth.

VThe combination with the slotted plate a, the attaching plate a to which the same is pivoted, of the springactuated-bolt Zand its casing and the stem d', the sliding barfand its casing e, a spring S for actuating the same IIO and pressing it forward in the case, said bar f being provided with a Wedge-shaped notch 9 and a key with a single bar g for operating the parts, substantially as set forth.
8. In a door check and lock, the combination with a slotted plate, an attaching plate pivoted thereto, a spring actuated bolt engaging the slotted plate and a bolt stem or connection d', of the casing e and its attaching plate e', the Vface of the casing being mortised at 6 and provided With notches 7, the sliding bar f Within the casing having a Wedge-shaped notch 9, a cross piece ll and a spring 8 for pressing the same forward in the easing, and a key g with a bar g acting against the Wedge-shaped notch 9 in operating the parts, substantially as set forth.
9. In a door check and lock, the combination with theslotted plate a, the attaching plate et pivoted thereto, a spring actuated bolt d and bolt stem d', of the casingeand its attaching plate, said casing having a face' mortise 6 with side notches 7, the sliding bolt f Within the casing, the back plate f the spring 8 for pressing the sliding bar forward in the casing, a cross piece 1l upon the sliding bar, a finger button 10 and hook l2, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
