Description

(Modem I 2 I .0. E. BRIGGS.
, BRACKET SEAT.
Patented Peb.20, 1883.

UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSOARE. BRrees, OF BINGHAMTON, NEW YoRn BRACKET-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 272,522, dated. February 20, 1883.
Application filed June 30,1881. (ModeL) and useful Improvements in Bracket-Seats, of
which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to a folding seat.
Figure 1 is a front view with .the seat folded. Fig. 2 is a plan view with the seat in position for being occupied. Fig. 3 isa vertical section taken centrally of the seat. Figs. 4 and 5 are detached views. a v
A represents a vertical board. .or the back ofa school-desk having my invention applied thereto.
A is a circular recess cut in the'front face of the board. v
A? isa circular seat secured, by means of a pivot, b, to a bracket-arm, B, which is hinged at b to a forked or slotted plate or arm, consisting in this instance of two bars or arms,
0 O, hinged to the upright boardAat c. The
bracket B may be cast in one piece or formed in two parts firmly united, as indicated in Fig. 3. i
D is a brace pivoted to the board A at d, and to the bracket B at d. The brace is slotted at its lower end, where it carries a latchpiece, Ff, pivoted atf.
D is a spring secured to the supportingwall and pressing outward against the brace 1), thus forcing the seat outward and upward and facilitating its disengagement from the recess and raising it into position.
f isa lip projecting from the upperend ofthe latch-piece, and serving as a stop to regulate the inward throw of the part F of-the la chpiece when actuated by a tongue-spring, f?.
E is a locking-link pivoted at 0, preferably by the same pivot which unites the bracketpiece B to the frame 0 G, and having its lower end bent at right angles, as at E. (See Fig. 4.)
E is a spring guard, attached at its lower end to the upright board A, with its upper end resting upon the brace D, in such position as to confine the arm Eof the locking-linkin close contact with the rear face of brace D.
G is a metal plate, secured to board A immediately below the recess A.
H is a-kuob, provided-with a shank, h h, and located in an opening in the plate G, the portion h passingthrough a hole in the lower end, f, of the locking-latch.
I is a latch reciprocating vertically upon the inner face of plate G, and thrown upward by the spiral spring '5 v t is a stem projecting from latch I into the path of a tripping-jaw, t, attached to the shank h.
Whenthe seat is in the position shown in Fig. 3 the arm E of link E engages with the locking-lever F and retains the bracket B and frame 0 G in line with each other, and thus supports the seat A When it is desired to let the seat down the operator thrusts the knob H and its attached shanks inward, thus tripping the locking-lever and releasing link E, which permits the bracket and frame to fold up and the seat to swing downward into the recess A until the locking-latch I enters the groove a, which extends around the seat, thus holding the parts in position. 7 a
When it is desired to raise the seat the operator turns knob H and tripping-jaw i so as to withdraw the latch from groove a, when the seat is forced outward and upward by the spring D into the position shown in Figs. 2 and 3, thus thrusting down arm E, which will engage with the locking-latch, as shown in Fig. 3.
What I claim is 1."The combination, with the supportingwall A, bracket B,seat. A and link 0 O, hinged to said Wall and bracket, of the brace D. hinged to the bracket and to the wallA, catchF, and" springf by which said bar can be secured and released, spring Efland knob H for operating'said catch, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the supportingwall A, bracket B, seat A link 0 U, hinged to said wall and bracket, and brace D, hinged to said wall and seat, of the spring D, whereby the seat is forced outward, substantially as set'forth.
3. The combination, with the catch F, which holds the seat open, and the catch I, which holds the seat sh ut, of the knob H, having the tripping device -i, whereby the catch I'is disengaged when the knob is rotated, and movable in the direction of its axis to trip the catch F, substantially as set forth.
OSCAR E. BRIGGS.
