To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FREDERICK J. KALDEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tarrytowu, in the county of \Vestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sample-EX- hibiiors for Tobacco-Pipes and other Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in devices for mounting tobacco-pipes or similar articles on a card or suitable backing for exhibition as samples; and the purpose of my improvement is to provide means whereby the pipes can be secured to such backing in a detachable manner, so that the samples can be easily removed and interchanged when required.

In the accompanying drawings, which fully illustrate my attachment, Figure 1 is a plan view of a portion ofa sample-card having a pipe mounted and secured thereon by my improved attachment. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the pipe detached, and Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken through the line mm of Fig.2.

Let a in general represent the attaching device which secures the pipe 2) to the sample card or backing c. This attachment consists of a piece of wire, (preferably being of asingle continuous piece of wire,) which is fastened at respective points, by the pins or studs (1 d, to the backing c. This wire is so formed and bent as to produce a spring-clip having means at each end forholding, respectively,the stem end and bowl end of the pipe in a detachable manner.

At the point e on the straight wire is formed the coil 6, and from thence the wire is extended or bent up in a vertical direction, producing a spring-arm, f, where it bends down ward and forms another coil, g, terminating in a downwardly-projecting spring-arm, h, the whole forming a double spring-clip or clasping-arm adapted to embrace and hold the bowl Serial No. 240,593.

end of the pipe, and also to exert a lateral spring-pressure on the pipe for holding it in a horizontal position. At the opposite end of the straight piece of wire a coil, t, is formed, and the extremity is bent backward to produce a hook-shaped end, j, the free or terminal point of which is adapted to be inserted into the aperture in the stem of the pipe.

In attaching the pipe the bowl end is pressed up so that the springarm h will clasp over the edge of the bowl,when, by forcing the arm outwardly in a lateral direction, the opposite arm, j, will readily spring into the apcrturein the stem of the pipe.

By a slight manipulation of the double spring-arm has, for instance, by adjusting it to a greater or less vertical position-the attachment may be made to accommodate itself to pipes of different sizes having stems of varying lengths.

Any number of these attachments may be placed on a foundation or backing ofanysuitable material, such as pasteboard or wood. The position and variety of the samples of pipes may be interchanged one with another on the card, and any one may be removed for examination and replaced without difficulty.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device for attaching tobacco-pipes to sample-cards, consisting of awire provided at one end with a spring-retaining arm to embrace the edge of the pipe-bowl and at the other with a hook-shaped extremity to receive the stem, as set forth.

2. The backing 0, wire a, formed with a hook-shaped end, j, coil 0, arms fand h, and coils g i, and pins 0?, as and for the purpose set forth.
