UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SIMON R. STIBGEN, OF MARIETTA, PENNSYLVANIA.
EYEGLASS-HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,268, dated August 6, 1889.
Application filed April 17 1889.
T0 aZZ whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SIMON R. STIBGEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marietta, in the county of Lancaster, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Eyeglass-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention has relation to an improvement in eyeglassholders, the main object thereof being the provision of a mouth-piece or tooth-plate, by means of which the holder and the eyeglass are supported by the teeth.
Another object is to provide an elastic support simple in construction and capable of being manufactured at a minimum cost.
Other objects of my invention will appear in the following description, and the advantages thereof will be particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a general View of my device in an operative position, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my invention with eyeglass attached.
A represents my holder, which is made, preferably, of light wire. One end of the holder is bent into an annular form A for the purpose of engaging the frame B of the eyeglass. The end of the wire is then bent into the form of a hook A for the purpose of holding the ring A snugly at the bend A thus preventing any slipping of the ring. At A the wire is bent around in the form of a spiral spring to make an elastic spring-joint. The other end of the wire is then bent into an annular form A for the reception, by welding, soldering, or otherwise, of the plate C, which is adapted to be held between the teeth of the user, as
Serial No. 307,621. (No model.)
shown in Fig. 1. This plate may be made of any suitable material and may be used to display the manufacturers stamp.
I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the use of wire for making the body of my holder, or to making the tooth-plate in the form described.
\Vhat I claim is 1. An eyeglass-holder having a construction for holding the glass, and having also a mouthpiece, substantially as described.
2. An eyeglassholder adapted to be held in the mouth and provided with an elastic spring-joint, substantially as specified.
3. The combination, with an eyeglass, of a holder having an elastic spring-joint and a mouthpiece or tooth-plate, substantially as specified.
4. As an improved article of manufacture, an eyeglass holder formed of wire having one end bent into an annular form, with a hook for holding the glass, the other end bent to hold a mouth piece or plate and between its ends formed into aspiral spring, substantially as described.
5. An eyeglass'holder formed of .a single piece of metal and comprising a lateral portion provided with a mouth-piece, a substantially vertical portion having provisions for holding the glass, and an elastic spring-joint at the junction of the lateral and vertical portions, substantially as described.
Intestimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
SIMON R. S'FIBGEN. Htnesses:
JOHN ORULL, EDWARD RUSING.
