.To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, DANIEL WERTZ, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fayette, in the county of Howard and State of Mis- 5 souri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bustles; and I do declare the fol-lowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to bustlcs; and the improvement consists in the novel features presently to be described and claimed, and shown in the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bustle embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of a modified form; Fig. 3, an enlarged perspective detail view of one end of the bustle; Fig. 4, a perspective detail view of the wire form, composed of the side supports and the back stay for the waist-strap.

The object of the present invention is to improve that class of bustles which have the top bow, the bottom bow or spring-arms, and loops at each end of the bow made of a single Wire, in such a manner that the immediate 3o bows will not be attached to the same loop as the harness, and the double loops arranged side by side will be dispensed with, and instead the loops will be made of variable size and arranged the one within the other, the intermediate bows will be secured to the inner loop and bear laterally against the outer loop, and the spring-arms or bottom bow (whichever is integral with the loops and top how) will bear upon the opposite side of the 4o exterior loop, which loop will be embraced between said spring-arms or bottom bow and the intermediate bottombows. The harness, which will befastened to the exterior loop, can be much larger than is feasible by any other construction. This increased size gives a more extended bearing for the straps of the harness, which is thereby prevented from wrinkling and causing vexatious delay in arranging and adjusting the bustle.

Another object is to devise the wire form, composed of side supports and a back stay,

which is designed to connect the waist-strap with the ends of the bustle and hold said waiststrap distended so it can readily be adjusted or passed about the waist.

A further object is the. construction of the hip-strap, which is made of rubber or suitable material, either in one or two pieces adjustably-connected together so the set of the bustle can be regulated.

The bustle is composed of the top bow, A, the exterior and interior loops, a and a, and the spring-arms a, formed of a single wire, the bottom and intermediate bows, B and G,

the waiststrap D, and the hip-strap E. The top bow, formed of a single wire, has the exterior and interior loops near each end of the wire, which ends are extended beyond. and bear against the inner sides of the exterior loop. The intermediate bows are connected at their ends with the interior loops and bear externallyupontheexteriorloops. Thespringarms are connected at their ends with the bottom bow, B, and the top, bottom, and intermediate bows are held together by the tapes or webs F. The wire form is composed of a single wire, and consists of side supports, G, the loops 9, and the back stay, 11. The side supports are connected at their lower ends with the loops of the bustle, preferably the inner loops, so as to bear laterally against the exterior loops and be stayed thereby. The back stay, H, is curved similar to the bows, and is connected at its middle with the top bow. The waist-strap is fastened to the middle of the back stay, and is secured near each end to the loops 9. The form not only connects the waist strap with the bustle, but keeps said waist-strap distended so it can be readily passed about the waist of the wearer when adjusting the bustle.

Fig. 2 shows the ordinary harness applied to my improved bustle. The side supports, G, of the tape are secured to the exterior loops, a, and the waist-strapis so fastened to the top bow and to the upper ends of the side supports.

The hip-strap, composed of rubber or suit able elastic material, is made of one piece passed around the exterior loops and having its ends adj ustably connected together, or may be composed of two pieces having their outer ends secured to the exterior loops and their inner ends adjnstably connected together for regulating the tension of said strap and the set of the bustle.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s

1. A bustle composed of top, bottom, and intermediate bows, and an exterior and interior loop near each end of the top bow, which ends are extended from the inner loops beyond and bear against one side of the exterior loops, and the intermediate bows connected with the interior loops and bearing upon the opposite sides of the exterior loops, substantially as set forth.

2. A bustle composed of the top and bot tom hows, the exterior loops, and the interior loops located wholly within the exterior loops, the intermediate bows fastened to the interior loops, and the harness connected with the exterior loops, substantially as described.

'3. The combination, with the bustle having loops at each end, of the wire form composed of a wire having straight side supports, G,

the loops 9, and the back stay, H, the lower ends of the side supports being loosely connected with said end loops of the bustle, and the waist-strap fastened to the middle of the back and secured to the loops 9, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. The herein shown and described bustle, composed of the top bow having an exterior and interior loop near each end, which ends are extended past and bear upon the inner sides of the exterior loops, the bottom and intermediate bows secured to the interior loops and bearing upon the outer sides of the exterior loops, the wire form consisting of side supports, loops, and the back stay, the waiststrap, and the hip strap of elastic material having its ends adj ustably connected together, substantially as and for the purpose described.
