Description

M. PAYNE. 1
Churn.
No. 37,106. Patented Dec. 9, 1862.
N, PEYEFG. WWW Washington. D. C.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
'MORGANPAYNE, OF cannineron, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 37,106. dated December 9, 1862.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MORGAN PAYNE, of Gardington, in the county of Morrow and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in the Construction of Dashers for Ohurns; and I hereby declare that the following is a true and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing two dashers on the same shaft in such a manner that when the shaft is turned in one direction both dashers serve to agitate the milk sufficiently to produce the butter, and when the motion of the shaft is reversed the upper dashers rise to the surface and perform the office of collecting the butter in masses, so as to facilitate its removal.
In the annexed drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of the dashers adjusted to the shaft A. The lower end of the shaft is furnished with a gudgeon, which rests on a step at the bottom of the churn. The upper end of shaft is adapted to receive a crank for operating the machine. The lower dashers, e e, are attached to the ends of rod B, which passes through the shaft A. The dashers e e are secured to the rod at an angle of forty-live degrees. d d, the upper dashes, (shown in Fig. 2,) are fastened at the same angle to the arm 0, which is sufficiently wide to admit of a mortise to receive the shaft A, which passes through it. The dashers are all of an oblong forn1,convex at the outer edge and slightly concave at the inner edge, and are made to taper from the middle to each end. The mortise in the arm 0 is to be of sufficient size to allow 0 to play freely on the shaft, so that when, from the direction the shaft is moving, the opposing liquid strikes the under side of the dashers d 01 they are forced to the top and perform their office of collecting the butter.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The shaft A, in connection with the rod B and dashers e e, and the arm 0, with the dashers dd, the whole arranged in the manner and for the purpose herein specified.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
MORGAN PAYNE.
