B. L. WINNER, OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS.
IMPRCVEMENT IN CHURNS.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, B. L. NVINNER, of Belvidere, in the county of' Boone and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Churn; anti I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specitication, in which Figure l represent a vertical section of my inventiomtaken in the linew x, Fig.2;Fig. 2, a vertical section ofthe same, taken in the line y y Fig. 1.
imilar letters ot' reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to anew and improved churn of that class in which two reciprocating dashers are employed; and it consists in the combination of oblique stops, hereinafter described, and dashers attached to their rods by ajoint or hinge and having stops attached to the rods; all beingarranged in such a manner that the dashers, whendescendingr or being forced down `through the cre-um, will be kept in a horizontal position, so as to act eciently upon the cream, and when ascending allowed to bend down, so as to offer but little resistance to the cream, and thereby admitting of the churn being operated with but a moderate expenditure ot' power.
A represents the body of the churn, which may be ofrectangular form, and provided with a lid, B, having two standards, G C, upon it, in the upper parts of which there is fitted a horizontal shaft, D, provided withtwo cranks, E E, ha\ ing reverse positions. t
F F are two rods, which are connected by links G G with the cranks E E, the links being connected by joints a with the rods F.. The lower ends ot' the rods F have cross-bars lower ends of the rods F. These dashers are allowed to turn down; butthey canuotascend above a horizontal plane, as the lower ends'of t the rods F serve as stops for them. The bars il have each a sheet-metal plate attached to them, and these plateshave an inclined position, being at, an angle of about forty-five degrees` and serving as stops or supports for the y dashers, preventing them from incliuing downward beyond the an gie aforesaid. (See Fig. 2.)
The shaft D is provided with a `crank,L, for y y the purpose of' turning it, and it may also `have a iiy-wheel upon it. By turning the shaft D" 1 the dashers l I will move simultaneously in cpposite directions, one rising as the other falls, 9 the descending dasherV having a horizontal position aud acting eiiiciently upon the cream,
while the ascending dasher yields or turns down,'resting or bearing against its stop H, so that it may passireely upward throughthe cream. t t 1 t t By this arrangement the churn may be operated with a moderate expenditure of power` and the cream agitated in such a manner as to cause the butter to be. quickly produced.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Let t ters Patenty' y Ihe combination of the oblique stops K with hinged dashers land bars H, all constructed, arranged, and operatingas specified.`
