i Letters Patent No. 73,583, dated January 21, I8d8.
IMPROVEMENT IN GHRN-DASHER.
To ALL wHoM I'r-MAY ooNoER'N:
Be it known that LIMORGAN O. DAVIS, of Warrensbur-g, in the county of Warren, and AState of New-York, have invented a new and improved Dasher; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference' being had tothe accompanying drawings, forming,r part of this specification. I
This invention relates to a new and improved method of constructing dashersfor chui-ns, by means of which the butter is separated from the millsin a' much shorter time, and whereby the same is easily taken apart to be cleaned.
` It consists of a vertical shaft, through which are boards or paddles, having one end in aline with said shaft, andthe other end inclined to said line at an angle of forty-tive degrees, or thereabouts, the whole being attachedV to a vertical shaft, having on it a bevelled gear-pinion, driven-by a bevclled gear-wheel, upon a horizontal shaft above it. 'Said dashcr-boards are fitted in ,a mortise in the dasher-shaft, so that they may easily be removed, ,and are secured in the same by a suitable kcy. I
The drawing represents a side view of my invention. G is an upright or frame, to which the whole is fastened. a is a frame, having a back and horizontal arms, for the support of the shaft C and the shaft' E, and in whichthey rotate. A is a b'evelled-gcar wheel. C is the main shaft, on whichis thewheel A. D is a handle on wheel A, by meansof which the'same is driven. B is ,a pinion on the vertical shaft Eftting into and driven v by the wheel A. E is the vertical Vsh'aft to which dasher is attached. F'is the dasher-shaft, attached to shaft; E bythe screw-thread S. a are the dasher-boards, fitted through the shaft FQ K is the key, by means of which the dasher-boards or paddles a are secured in shaft'F. The frame a is composed 'cfa back and two horizontal arms, at convenient distances apart, and arranged 'as shown in the drawing, for the support of the shafts C and E.- Said frame may be secured by screws passing through the same to any upright, G, or to any convenient '.portion of the room. The horizontal shaft C and the vertical 4shaft E turn. in suitable bearings on the frame a', and are connected by the bevelled-gear wheel A and the bevelled-gear pinion B, in the usual way of communieating motion from a horizontal toa vertical shaft, as shown in theI drawing. The wheel A is larger, and hasl more teeth than the pinion B, by means of which greater speed is given to the shaft E. The whole is driven by means of the handle D, attached to the wheel A. Upon the lowercn-d of the vertical shaft E, as shown in the drawing, is a screw-thread S, by means of which the dasher-shaft F is attached to the vertical shaft E, so that the said shaft may, at any time,'be removed. .The lower endvoi` thedasher-shaft Fis made square,'has through it mortises at right vangles to each other,to receive the dasher-boards a, (which may be of any convenient num* berg) so that any one flasher-board a is at right angles to the one above and below it. Each mortise is cut so as to open into the mort-ipse above and below, and so as the lower edge of one` dasher-board will rest upon the upper edge of the one below, and at right angles to it. The upper mortise terminates in a key-way, through which -passesy the key K, and by means of` which all the dasher-boards ct are held in thev shaft F, and`held also firmly together. The dasher-boards a have one end, or the part on one side of the shaft F, in a'vcrtical line with the said shaft; F, and are provided also, in that end, withl holes. -The other end, or the part on theother side of said shaft. is inclined to said shaft F at an angle. of about forty-tive degrees. l
The dasher, as above described, may be made of wood, or wood and metal combined, and, as above described, constitutes an economical andftime-saving dasher for butter-churns, the advantages of` which are, that butter may bequicker made and more effectually separated fromthe buttermilk, and also that the dash-boards, which are liable t-o become rancid, may be easily removed to be cleansed.
Irclaim as new, and desire to secure b.y Letters Patentv Adasher, composed of the shaft F and dasher-boards a and key K, substantially as. shown an'd described, and for the purposes set forth. i
MORGAN O. DAVIS.
