- the power is applied to the winch and shaft C, turning the bevel-wheel D, which is geared into the pinion E on the end of the shaft F.
- G G are the floats, attached to and revolving with the shaft F. This shaft is not set vertically, but turns upon a stop on one side of the centre, so as to give the shaft and floats an inclination.
- the rotation of the floats throws the cream to thesurface and down against the bottom of the churn, thereby imparting an action essentially different from that given by churns in which the shafts and floats are vertical, and also leaving room on one side to place the vertical diaphragm H, filling the space between the floats and the side of the churn-casing.
- This diaphragm is movable and perforated, so that the globules of cream driven against it by the floats G may be more completely broken.

Letters Patent No. 69,391, dated October 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN CHURNS.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. O. BENNETT, of Mount Pleasant, in the county of Henry, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Churns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in wl1ieh-- I Figure 1 is a vertical section, and
Figure 2 is also a vertical section on a plane at right angles to that making fig. 1.
, The same letters in both figures indicate identical parts.
A is the casing of the churn, covered by the lids A A; B is the frame supporting the driving gearing. The power is applied to the winch and shaft C, turning the bevel-wheel D, which is geared into the pinion E on the end of the shaft F. G G are the floats, attached to and revolving with the shaft F. This shaft is not set vertically, but turns upon a stop on one side of the centre, so as to give the shaft and floats an inclination. The rotation of the floats throws the cream to thesurface and down against the bottom of the churn, thereby imparting an action essentially different from that given by churns in which the shafts and floats are vertical, and also leaving room on one side to place the vertical diaphragm H, filling the space between the floats and the side of the churn-casing. This diaphragm is movable and perforated, so that the globules of cream driven against it by the floats G may be more completely broken.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination of the floats G G, the inclined shaft F, the perforated diaphragm H, with the driving machinery of a rotary churn-dasher, substantially as described.
In testimony whereofI have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
E. O. BENNETT.

H. O. SAUNDERS, H. FULLER.
