Description
NPETERS. PHDTO-LITDIOGRAPKER, WASHINGTON D C ateut @ffice may MORGAN A. McAFE-E, OF TALBOTTON, `GEORGIA.`
Letters Patent No. 88,399, dated March 30, 1869. l
xMPRovnMnN-r 1N cHURNs.
The Schedule referred to n these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom ttmay concern:
Be it known that I, MORGAN A. MGAFEE, of Talbotton, in the county of Talbot, and State of Georgia, have invented a new and improved Combined Spinning- Wheel and Ghurn; and I do hereby declare that the followingis a full, clear, and exact description thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art tp make and use the same, .reference being had to the. accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification.
This invention has for its object to provide certain improvements in churns, as will be hereinafter more fully described.
The drawing represents a side elevation of my improved apparatus.
A represents the bench of a common spinning-wh eel, and B, the belt, or cord employed towork thereon, to drive the spindle.
B' represents, in red, a cask, or other vessel, such as is commonly used for churning butter.
C represents a vertical shaft, stepped in the bottom of the same, and supported at the top in an adjustable manner, by a stud, D, projecting from the vertical wall of a room, or other suitable support for the same.
Within the vessel B', and near the bottom, the shaft O is provided with laterally-projecting arn1s,E, having their advancing faces inclined in a manner. to throw the cream upward and above the same.
A sliding head, l?, is splined to the shaft, in a manner to be rotated by it, and to slide freely up and down thereon, and provided with the downward-projecting arms G. By this arrangement it will flcaton the cream, and will counteract the upward movement of the cream, caused by the arms E, thus keeping up an intense agi tation when under high rotation.
The said shaft is provided, near the top, 4with a grooved pulley, H, for the reception of the belt B, by which it is rotated at a high speed.
In order to bring the belt to the level of the wheel H, or thereabout, and also to separate the two parts,
rso that they will not wear against the guide-post,1 provide a pulley, or roller, I, in advance ,of the post, having two grooves in it, over which the-two parts of the belt work, as represented in the drawing.
And, in order to facilitate the cheap construction of the same, I drive a pin, or stud in the shaft C, to se'- cure the wheel H, and make in one side of the same, at the hole for the shaft, a recess, for the reception of the stud, when the pulley is placed on the shaft, and adjusted to the right position. pulley is made readily removable, and the stud D, being also arranged detachably, the shaft may be readily set up forv operation, or taken down.
rEhe churn may be arranged relatively to the spinning-apparatus, to admit the belt B to answer for 0perating either; and, if preferred, the churn and spinning-.frame may be connected by braces, or otherwise, for steadying the churn. l
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The self-adjusting head F, having the arms G, in combination with the dasher-shaft C, las herein described, for the purpose specied.
MORGAN A. MGAFEE.
