H. JAMES, `0F ALEXANDRIA, PENNSYLVANIA. I Letters Patent No. 90,0627, dated May 11, '1869. l l
'IMPRovnmN'r m canines I l.. I
The Schedule` referred to in' these Letters` Patent and part o! the sama.
To all fivhom it ma/y .concem Be it known that I, H. E. JAMES, of West Alexr andria, in the county of Washington, and -State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Ohurns; 'and I (1o-hereby declare that 4 the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation Yof the same, reference .being had to the `annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and` to `the letters and figures of refer ence marked thereon. y A
Figurel of the drawings is a representation of y a plan Figure 2 is av longitudinal sectionof the same.
,The object of myinvention is to provdefor family nse-aehurn, operated with a .vertical dasher, that shall be more eicient and useful than anysimilar device. heretofore invented; and
ism by which th'dasher is operated.
Butteris held in creamV and milk in su1all`capsules,
j andthe process` called churning consists in breaking the caps ofthese capsules and gathering the butter i so released 'into one mass. f
To accomplish this resultwith` expedition, regard must be paid to the temperature of the uid, but the `principal means necessary consist in sharp, rapid move-l ments of a dasher, so as to keep the fluid ineonstant and thorough agitation.
My'device enables Y the operator to accomplish this object, and it is so arranged that it may be applied to nearly all upright churns without diliculty.
` The letter A of the drawings represents an ordinary i uprightchurn,- to which my Adevice may be attached.v
'The letter B is a ring, designed for adjustment by set-screws a around the top of the churn,in the man` ner shown. l l 'l The `letters O are standards attachedl to the ring B and having 'cross-piece b setin dovetails 4upon their summits. This cross-piece is removable.
The letter c isl a. crank-shaft, and
d is a pinion adjusted thereon, in the manner represented. A i i The letter c' is a shaft, having a crank, f, at its centr'e, a small pinion, g, Working with the pinion d, and a ily-Wheel, 71., as represente The letter i is a short standard aixed tothe ring -dasher'handle, as shown in fig. 2. y The letter s is the upper end of `the dasher-handle,
hinged or pivoted to the handle itself in such manner as to allow suilcient play therefor, without binding or wedgin'g -in the cover'of the churn.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-` f' The combination and arrangement of the ring B, withits set-screws, standards C and i, shafts e and e, pinions d, and slottedarm, and pivoted dasher-handle for the purposes .speciiied In testimony that I claim the above, I have heres, when constructed andfoperating substantially as and' nes'ses.
Aunto subscribed my name, in the presence of two wit- H.' E. JAMES.
Witnesses Oms. DoUGHERTy, JOHN BLAYNEY.
