L. B. BERTRAM. STAMP 0R LABEL DAMPENER- No. 371,025. Patented Oct. 4, 1887.
Invenior I .Zeopoldjjezflm UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEOPOLD BERAL BERTRAM, OF COLVILLE MANSIONS, BAYSVATER, COUNTY OF MIDDLESEX, ASSIGNOR TO FREDERICK HENRY JUDSON, OF HARE- VVOOD, STREATHAM, COUNTY OF SURREY, ENGLAND.
STAMP OR LABEL DAMPENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 371,025, dated October 4, 1887.
Application filed May 14, 1886. Serial No.202,202. (No modeli) Patented in England November 24, 1885, No. 14,403.
To all whom it may concern: a 7
Be it known that I, LEOPOLD BERAL BER- TRAM, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Golville Mansions, Bayswater, county of Middlesex, England, have invented an Improved Stamp or Label Dampener, (for which I have obtained a patentin Great Britain, No. 1l,403, hearing date November 24,1885,)
of which the following is a specification.
:o The object of this invention is to construct a postage and like stamp or label dampener for oflfice or general use, so that the stamp or label to be affixed has only to be drawn across an exposed saturated piece of sponge-felt to moisten the gummed back and then applied in the well-known manner, the usual but objectionable licking by the tongue of a person being obviated.
My invention is clearly shown in the annexed drawings, Figure 1 being a perspective View of the box-cover removed, with the filling'hole near the middle. Fig. 2 shows a similar cover, in connection with the box, with the fillinghole near the end, the lower part, B, serving as a box for holding stamps. Fig. 3 represents a section of the stamp-licker and stampbox, the licker-frame and water-vessel forming the lid to the box when closed. Fig. 4
' shows the lid thrown open and the stamp-box o exposed.
In the said drawings, the letter A designates the lid or cover, having suitable connections with a body portion or box, B, adapted to contain stamps or labels. The cover has raised sides G G, forming an inclosed chamber or space partly covered by a top, D, in which a space is left for the insertion of a piece of sponge-felt, E, which projects above the top D, its lower portion lying in the space inclosed by the sides 0. In the top D is formed, at a 4 suitable point, a filling-opening closed by a screw -plug, F, whereby water may be admitted to saturate the sponge-felt. This opening may be at the side or at the end of the water-chamber.
The method of using the device is too obvious to require description.
The space G is preferably loaded, to enable the article to be utilized as a paper-weight.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The stamp-box shown and described, consisting of a body portion, B, having the lid A, the water-box 0, carried by the lid A, and the sponge E, substantially as described. 5 5
2. As a new article of manufacture, the stamp-box shown and described, consisting of the body portion B, adapted to contain stamps, the hinged lid A, the water and sponge box mounted upon the said lid, and the sponge E, substantially as described.
LEOPOLD BERAL BERTRAM.
