D. H. HOWD,
ENVELOPE FOR PHOTOGRAPHS.
No. 308,672. Patented Dec. 2, 1884.-

DANIEL H. HOWD, OF PATERSON, NEW' JERSEY.
ENVELOPE FOR PHOTOGRAPHS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 308,672, dated December 2, 1884.
Application filed April 4, 1884. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DANIEL H. HOWD, of Paterson, in the State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Envelopes for Photographs, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to furnish an improved envelope which is specially designed for mailing photographs and similar articles-such as Christmas and Easter cards, &c.; and the invention consists of an envelope the body or main part of which is re-enforced by an interior lining of pasteboard that is inclosed in a pocket formed by an interior covering-flap, as will more fully appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a perspective View of my improved envelope for photographs. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same, shown with the flaps of the envelope in open position, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the same on line a; m, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corre sponding parts.
A in the drawings represents an envelope of that class that is open at one of its ends, and of a size and shape corresponding to the size of the photographs to be mailed therein. The central oblong body or main portion, a, of the envelope is re-enforced by an interiorlayer of pasteboard, b, which is covered by an interior layer of paper, cl, that is pasted at two or more sides by flaps d d to the end flaps, side flaps, or end and side flaps of the envelope, as shown in Fig. 2. The end flap d, that is pasted over the open end flap a of the envelope, re-enforces said flap a, so as to admit the ready opening and closing of the same, either for inspection while the photograph passes through the mail, or when the same is taken out for exhibition and replaced. The covering or layer of paper d forms, with the body or main part a of the envelope,a pocket that retains the re-enforcing layer 1) of pasteboard, and incloses the same, so that it cannot be seen when handling the envelope.
For mailing a photograph the same is simply inserted into the envelope and the end flap a inserted looselyover the photograph into the envelope, which admits inspection of the envelope by the post-office officials, while protecting the photograph or other card against breakage or other injury while in the mail.
Having thus described my invention,I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination, with an envelope, of an interior layer of pasteboard corresponding in size to the oblong body or main part of the envelope, and of a covering-layer of paper extending over the stiffening-layer of pasteboard and attached to the flaps of the envelope, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
DANIEL H. HOXVD.
