WATCH-LCHAIN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,053, dated August 30, 1887.

Application filed June 10, 1887. Serial No. 240,864. (No nn-del.)

To all whom, it may concern.-

Be it known that I, HERMANN FRITSOHE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have inventedcertain new and useful Improvements in Watch-Chains, of which the following is a V specification.

This invention relates to certain new anduseful improvements in that class of watchchains that are worn around the neck.

The object of my invention is to provide chains of this kind with a branch chain for holding an eyeglass or pencil, which branch chain can be moved up and down on the main chain and heldin different places on the same.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of'parts and details, as will be fully described and set forth hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 shows my improved chain in perspective view, also showing the manner in which it is worn. Fig. 2 is a detail perspective view of part of the chain, showing the means for locking the branch chain in place on the main chain.

The chain A, which may have links of any desired pattern, shape, or size, and which may be made of any desired material, is of such length that it can be passed around the neck of the wearer, as shown. Two strands of the chain thus appear on the vest of the wearer, and on one of them a ring, B, is mounted to slide, with which a branch chain,'C, is connected, on the free end of which branch chain an eyeglass, E, or a pencil, 850., can be held by means of a snap-hook or analogous device.

Whenthe eyeglass is raised to be placed upon the nose, the ring 13 slides upward on the main chain A, and when the eyeglass is taken off and placed in the pocket the ring B slides down on the chain.

In some cases it is desirable to hold the ring B in a certain position on the main chain A, and for this purpose the ring B is provided withaspringlookingdevice. Forexample, the ring may be made of spring material and have two crossed prongs, a, which can be pressed together to disengage or unlock the springring from the chain A, the spring-ring looking automatically when released.

It is evident that the chain A and the branch chain may be made of hair or of silk strands or other material.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with a neck-chain, of a branch chain having one end mounted to slide on said neck-chain, substantially as herein shown and described.

2. The combination, with a neclcchain, of a sliding ring on the same and a branch chain connected with said ring, substantially as herein shown and described.

3. The combination, with aneck-chain, of a spring clamping device on the same and a branch chain connected with said clamping device, substantially as herein shown and described.
