Be itknown that I, ELIZA W. PRUSSI'A, of Marlboro, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachu- Betts, have invented anew and improvedOlasp for Shoes, Boots, Belts for Ladies Dresses, lite.; and I do hereby declare the following is afull and exact description of the construction and use thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and tothe letters of reference marked thereon,

The first feature of my invention relates to my device for drawing together two ends of a ladys belt, the two sides of a shoe or boot, over Athe instep, dac., and holding them in any desired position, and consists in -a disk containing a spiral groove, in which hooks are placed, and this so constructed and arranged that when the two hooks areattached to the two ends of a belt or other things to be clasped, by turning the disk the said ends will he drawn toward each other to any desired position. i

The second4 feature of my invention relates to the covering, and consists of a covering over the clasp for the double purpose of preventing the holding part fromi becominginjured, and rfor the `artistic er tasteful appearance of the clasp.

Figure 1 shows my'clasp with the cover on the upper side as placedvwhen in use.

Figure 2 shows the reverse side. i

Figure 3 is aperpendi'cular section, showing the cover, .the disk withthe spiral' groove, and the hooks in the same.

Figure 4s shows another style of clasp withthecover on it.

Figure 5 shows the tn'operts of the clasp at fig. 4 without the cover.

Figure 6 shows a section of the same with the cover, also shows the rivets by which the two parts may be attached to anything to Vbe clasped made of leather. v A i ais the cover; is the disk containing the spiral groove e,- e e are'the two hooks Working in the said spiral groove.

These hooks have eyes or small holes in their outer part, and so formed that they can be attached to anything to be clasped, and when so attached it will readily be seen that by turning the disk in the right'way the two hooks, by following the groove e, will be drawutoward the centre of the disk, and consequently the parts (ends ofa belt and c) will bedrawn toward each other and held in any position desired. :But it will be seen by examining figs. 3 and 5that the hooks and notches would be too much exposed, and for many purposes the clasp would appear unfinished, without a cover. -I therefore attach a cover to my clasp byl riveting, as shown in the drawings, or any other convenient'way. v

In the spiral clasp, I usually make the cover circular,vand the same size as the spiral disk, but in -the other style of clasp vshown vat figs. el, 5,1and 6, I make the cover the form ofthe outside of the part b', which conte/ins .thenotchesx i y The hook e in -this case passes up through the part 'and under the cover a to the desired notch, when it is secured. Y

On this cover may be worked any device or ornamentalor artistic figure, making the .clasp a beautiful ornament as `,vell as `the best'fastening, which could not be the case tothe same extent if thecover were omitted.

Having fully explained my clasp, what I claimv as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is 1. The device of a spiral groove'in a clasp, lin the manner. andl for tbe purpose described. 2. The attachment of a cover to the clasp, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
