FIG. 2.
UNIT
n'rns an GERTRUDE V. HUIVIMA AND CHARLOTTE M. I-IAFER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
UMBRELLA-CARRIER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 15, 1910.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GERTRUDE V. HUMMA and CHARLOTTE M. Hanna, citizens of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsyl- Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella-Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a new article of manufacture in the form of a carrier for umbrellas parasols and fans and it is intended more particularly for use by ladies in carrying such or like articles.
The object of the invention is to provide a convenient means for carrying an umbrella or like article when both hands of the user are otherwise occupied, the principal objectbeing to overcome the danger of mislaying or losing such article.
The device consists of a main member or loop, a supplemental member or loop adapted to slip over the wrist, both of which are preferably made of a suitable elastic ma terial and a means for attaching the device to an umbrella, in the form of a chain provided with suitable clasping means.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows our device in position on an umbrella. Fig. 2 is a separate view of the device, enlarged.
The numeral 1 designates the main member. This is in the form of a band of elastic covered with silk or like material and it is provided with two rings 2, one at the upper end and one at the lower end. To the upper ring we secure a second loop member 3, of like material and color though somewhat smaller than the main member 1. This member 3 is adapted toslip over the hand of the user and to encircle the wrist. This loop is ornamented in suitable manner as for instance with a rosette 4. Both loop members are shirred so as to permit the re quired elasticity. The lower ring 2 has secured thereto a chain 5. This chain is permanently attached to the ring 2 at one of its ends while the opposite end is provided with a spring ring 6, such as is commonly used on neck chains and like articles.
To secure the device to an umbrella, the chain is passed around the umbrella rod, immediately below the point where it enters the handle and the spring ring 6 is made to engage either the ring 2 or a smaller ring 7 permanently secured to the ring- 2.
When not in use the device may be readily removed from the umbrella.
It is evident that the device may be made of various materials and colors and ornamented if desired to suit the circumstances. It is also evident that the device may be ap plied with equal facility to parasols, fans, hand bags or like articles.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In an umbrella carrier, a main loop member of elastic material; a ring secured to both the upper and lower ends of said member; a wrist engaging loop member, smaller than the main member and secured to the ring in the upper end of the main member both of said loop members being shirred to permit the required elasticity; a chain permanently secured at one of its ends to the ring in the lower end of the main member and adapted to encircle the umbrella rod below its point of entrance into the handle and a spring ring secured to the opposite end of the chain and adapted to engage said lower ring.
In testimony whereof we afiiX our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
GERTRUDE V. HUMMA. CHARLOTTE M. HAFER.
