CARBOY CARRIER ANQD STAND.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 367,980, dated August 9, 1887.

To all? whom it may concern.

Be it known that I, LOUIS HILLEBRA ND, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Carboy Carriers and Stands, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention consists of means, substantially as hereinafter described and claimed, whereby a carboy may be readily carried and canted, thus avoiding the inconvenience, difficulty, and danger usually attending said op erations.

Figures 1 and 2 represent side elevations of a carboy and the carrying device and stand therefor embodying my invention. Fig. 3 represents a top or plan View of the carrying device. Fig. 4 represents a side elevation of the stand in folded condition. Fig. 5 represents a side elevation of ahandle employed.

Referring to the drawings, A represents a carboy of usual construction.

B represents parallel bars which, are connected, by screw-bolts G and placed on opposite sides of the box of the carboy, whereby by tightening the bolts said bars are clamped to the box.

Secured to the center of the bars B and projecting horizontally therefrom are journals D, which are pivotally supported on a horse or stand, E, said journals being formed with or attached to plates F, which are riveted or otherwise connected with the bars B, and having their inner sides recessed, forming sockets G, to receive a stick or handle, H, whereby the carboy may be conveniently rotated or turned on its axis. The stand E consists of two U- shaped bars or legs, which are pivoted together near the upper ends of their vertical limbs a, so that when the bars are separated forks are provided for the reception and support of the journals D of the bars 13. The lower limbs or cross-pieces, b, of the legs form the base of the receive some of the strain of the stand when the latter is loaded by the carboy.

stick or handle H as a wrench, whereby the bolts may be conveniently rotated for tightening and loosening purposes.

The several parts of my invention as enumerated are formed of suitable metal for purposes of strength and durability.

The operation is as follows: The bars B are located and adjusted on the sides of the box and the screws or bolts 0 tightened, whereby the bars are clamped to the-box of the carboy. The said bars are of such length as to project beyond both ends of the carboy, so as to provide handles whereby the carboy may be carried in a most convenient and easy manner-a feature which will be greatly appreciated by those who move or convey carboys as heretofore constructed by means of the cleats or blocks 6, provided forengagement of the hands. The carboy is supported by its journals on the stand E, so that it may receive swinging motions and be tilted or canted, thus providing convenient means for pouring out the contents of the carboy or bottle, avoiding the difficult and dangerous operation of overturning the carboy as heretofore practiced. The bars are primarily placed on the cleats c and thus guided true in position preparatory to the tightening operation of the screws. The bars when removed may be applied to other boxes, and so render service to an unlimited extent, it being evident that when they are removed they do not present obstacles to the close storage of carboys. The bars and screws when removed from the box may be formed into a bundle. The stand may also be folded and packed with the other parts in a manner convenient for transportation and storage.

- Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A carboy provided with the cleats e, in combination with the bars B and screw-bolts C, said bars abutting against the cleats and clamped to the sides of the carboy by said IOO D, attached to said plates F, and the stand E, combined substantially as described.

3. The bars B, with screw bolts connecting the same, and plates attached to the bars and 5 having journals, the latter secured to said plates, substantially as described.

4. The bars B, having connecting bolts C, the plates F, with sockets, and the journals D, and the stand, combined and operating sub to stantially as described.

5. The connected bars 3, having plates F, with journals D, and the stand E, having limbs a and yoke J, substantially as described.
